About time...

VFW National Commander recommends eliminating smoking from halls

(Uncasville-WTNH, Sept. 20, 2006 7:50 PM) _  The VFW's new National Commmander wants to ban smoking in all the organization's halls and that had veterans in the state talking.

  • by News Channel 8's Tina Detelj

The veterans we talked to say they fought for the right to smoke and make their own decisions and they do not want to see that change.

If you remember, VFW halls and other private clubs were among the only places people could have a drink and smoke after the state's new smoking law was implemented.

They have been congregating here for years, telling war stories and smoking but that could all change if smoking is banned at this VFW hall.

Marie Meziere, Uncasville VFW Post, says,"They come here to have a beer, to socialize, and have a cigarette."

Meziere says the veterans at the VFW Post in Uncasville are not too happy with the new National Commander's proposal to make VFW posts smoke free.  Many here and at the post in Taftville are from generations when smoking was accepted and even encouraged through ads.

George Bousquet, post commander, says,"When I was in Korea they used to give us cigarettes."

Bousquet is a Korean War veteran and the commander of the Taftville Post.  He says this type of change would not come without a fight.

Andy Pearson, Uncasville VFW Post, says,"They want to come in and have a cigarette and drink.  They should be able to.  They're the ones who paid the dues for all this to begin with."

Charles Muscarella does not smoke but feels his fellow veterans have the right to.

Muscarella says,"I did my time and that's the way it should be and that's the way I feel and I won't change my opinion."

The National Commander cannot force the posts to do anything, he can only lay out his vision and hope others see it his way.

Bousquet says,"The commander had said maybe put a separate room for smokers. Are you gonna put a bar out there too?"

The National Commander says he wants to make posts more family friendly so he is not only talking no smoking he is also talking cyber cafe and child care.

He wants posts to be seen as more than bars.

The National Commander has simply layed out his proposal.  He does not have the power to force VFW posts to follow his plan.

They are private and make their own decisions.

I almost find this funny, I have tried to quit smoking at least two dozen times since I got out of the army. I did not start until I was 20 years old and was out of ammo at a check point in the dom. rep. our sand bag bunker was getting shot up while we waited for the 17th cav. to show up.As a former athletic I had hated smoking , but thought what the hell we ain't getting out of here anyway, so I started smoking cig. that i had saved from my c-rations. That was it ,I was hooked--now the VFW is going to outlaw it ? Sorry your are 40 years to late for me.

I am non smoker, I finnaly quit for the last time 6 years ago. I cant stand the smell of the damn things. That being said I think this is a BAD idea. Give me a break. The VFW hall is a "home" for our War Vets to gather and if they want to smoke they damn well have the right to smoke there if they want!

I say F all this PC crap!

Hell the VFW just raised dues this year for yearly Memberships and Life Memberships; which isn't really driving in the new vets if you know what I mean.  Now National wants to ban smoking in the remaining Post Buildings; now that's foresight about getting future membership.  I don't smoke regularly, but come on strip clubs and other private clubs can have smoking rooms; so I guess that's the way of the VFW.

As a life member I'm just glad that the organization incluedes the membership natrionally in such decisions.(sarcasm off)

I'm Surprised Panama's still sea level, after all the Push Ups I did down there.

Woah... digging up old stuff eh?

My hall went smoke free over the Summer with nary a squeek from the membership. We do have a couple fellows who go outside to light up but I suspect the fact we have a few regulars who rely on bottled oxygen keeps them from making any sort of deal out of it.

In Jan 2008, Illinois will become mostly smoke free. Smoking will be prohibited in all public places or places of employment or within 15 feet of an entrance to public places or places of employment. No person may smoke in any vehicle owned, leased, or operated by the state or a political subdivision of the state. It's the coming thing. I quit smoking in 1975, can't stand the smell of cigarettes now.

Personally, I think they should look at some middle ground.

Our post has tons of smokers and runs Bingo two nights a week.  Although we love the people there, we don't go to the post anymore, because we don't like our colthes stinking when we go home.

Not that they've gone with this "Men's Auxiliary" idea - Having a "smokeless night" or two during the week where they have Bingo and open it up to outsiders could possibly go a long ways toward increasing membership, in my opinion.
