On Wednesday, September 27th, the 3-509th PIR will hold a deployment ceremony at Ft. Richardson, Alaska(I assume that it will be a ceremony for the entire brigade which would include the 1-501st). Veterans are invited to attend. More details will be posted as they become available.

I am currently sitting in my room on Ft. Richardson. We were out at 0615 this morning to the PT field for Reveille and to watch as the 4th Brigade moved out on a full Brigade 5 mile run. We met the 3-509th when they returned from the run and Association President John DeVanie spoke to them for a couple of minutes(all of this during a steady drizzle). Get picked up in about 25 minutes to head to the Deployment Ceremony. Will post photos after I return home.

| Barry thanks to you and John for making that trip, Hooah! God Bless all of them and their families!

| Here is an article on the deployment ceremony. I would like to note that the 509th Association is the only organization to make the trip for the ceremony. Alaska e-Post online

PAO staff report The 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, colors were cased in a ceremony Wednesday to mark the Spartans’ first deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. “You Paratroopers have a set of very broad shoulders to stand on — the shoulders of past Paratroopers that have laid the foundation for you to build on,” said Maj. Gen. Charles H. Jacoby Jr., United States Army Alaska commanding general. The Spartans’ journey started out little more than a year ago, when the unit formed around the nucleus of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment. From that one element grew a brigade of 3,500 Soldiers who have trained in California, Thailand, Louisiana and in Alaska’s arctic conditions. The deployment will take the Spartans south of Baghdad where they will continue the fight against insurgency and terrorism.
“We have prepared for this deployment,” said Col. Michael X. Garrett, commander, 4th BCT, 25th ID. “Today’s Paratroopers are the smartest, best trained, best led and most mentally and physically tough our nation has ever produced. We’re ready to continue that long and proud history of service as we deploy to Iraq.” The Spartans are comprised of six battalions: 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment 2nd Battalion, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment 425th Brigade Special Troop Battalion 725th Brigade Support Battalion
