Marine killed in California crash

By Diane Erwin

Staff Writer

Paul Gundolf was an outdoorsman with a great smile.

And the 22-year-old was a Marine.

Gundolf, who was promoted to sergeant last week, died in a head-on car crash Saturday afternoon in Twentynine Palms, Calif., where the Springfielder had been stationed since 2003.

"He was a kid who absolutely loved the Marines," said his father, Larry Gundolf.

He served two tours of duty in Iraq, returning from the most recent earlier this year.

Deputies arrested Joshua Dale Allison, 24, of Kansas, on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter. Allison was held in jail on a $75,000 bail.

The San Bernardino County sheriff’s office said Allison was driving east on Highway 62 near Copper Mountain Avenue and was using the center turn lane to pass other vehicles when he struck Gundolf. Witnesses said Allison was driving about 75 to 80 miles per hour.

Larry Gundolf said his son was very much an outdoors person, and he enjoyed 4-H. He was a hunter and wrestler and graduated from Northwestern High School and Springfield-Clark County Joint Vocational School in 2002.

"He kind of found his niche being a Marine," said his older brother, Andy Gundolf.

Andy Gundolf’s youngest child, Isaac William Paul, was born 10 weeks ago and named after his uncle. They never met.

A military funeral will be scheduled sometime later this week, his brother said. Arrangements will be by Littleton and Rue Funeral Home.

In addition to his father, brother and nephew, he is survived by wife Charity Gundolf, mother Beci Gundolf, sister Audra Haynes and four nieces.

The Desert Sun of Palm Springs, Calif., contributed to this story.

the Littleton and Rue funeral home is close to my house.  I will have to see when the funeral is and make an appearance.
