Heh... now this is interesting! First the real-deal... taken during a series of test conducted in 1963... Hercs were able to be launched and recovered from the flight deck but because there was no hanger space for them and having such a large bird on the flight deck disrupted normal operations, the concept was scrapped.

Now... just so that MM doesn't get all uppity about the "four fanned trashcans" being able to do something his beloved C-17 cannot... someone has been fooling with photoshop LOL!

Oh... and another interesting (real) shot... a U2 conducting carrier ops... makes you wonder what else has been tried eh?

Well in WWII the USS Hornet launched 16 B-25s so the Navy has been doing interesting things with Air Force A/C for some time! I'd like to see a C-17 do a cat shot off a carrier though, lol.

Stand in the door!

Hmmmm ... let's see. Some quick "back of the envelope calculations."

C-17 Approach Speed with Moderate Load = 110 knots = 126 mph.

Carrier (CVN Enterprise) Speed = 33 knots = 38 mph.

Assume 10 knots of wind = 12 mph.

Actual closing speed of C-17 coming in to land = 126 minus 38 minus 12 = 76 mph.

Heck, I go faster than that on the interstate to Nashville.

Width of flight deck (CVN Enterprise) = 252 feet.

Wingspan of C-17 = 169.8 feet.

Width of landing gear wheel base (outside to outside) = 33.7 feet.

One half wingspan plus one half landing gear width = 101.75 feet.

Yeah, the back of my envelope says it's doable.

Yeah, ya got that whole acceration and inertia portion to deal with, every time I've been on a carrier I'm impressed both with how big a ship it is and how small an airfield it is.
