| Found this site and thought I would post it here. Looking at their statements they support a Europe Defense Service Medal(as opposed to a Cold War service medal that would go to every swinging Richard who tried on a uniform during that period). They don't seem to be the whiners that make up the Cold War Veteran's Association, although I am still holding back on a final judgment. http://www.edva.us/index.html

Gimme a fricking break... there's a live shooting war going on and these guys are advocating for the minting of yet another bullshit award. I served in Germany during the tail end of the Cold War with the warhead security attachment of a Pershing missle battalion... and about as far North as you can be in Korea while Kim Il Sung was still alive. While difficult and arduous at times... neither assignment deserves a special medal or other kudo above and beyond what was given at the time... an Overseas Service Ribbon. Okay... my rant is over... going back to my corner.

| Steve, not to advocate this line but to offer a different point of view, the Overseas Service Ribbon only came about the last ten years of the Cold War. Most of us never received it(actually, I would rather see this one than the OSR since I have always thought it was worthless). Also, with the authorization of the Korean Defense Medal this would put service in NATO on roughtly the same level. This is also more in line with what I have argued means something rather than a Cold War Service Medal. Of course I've been out 25 years so I really could care less.

| Army, 1969 - 1972, Germany. I have the National Defense (Fire Watch) and Good Conduct (Good Kitty-Kitty). When I was in the Legion Pipe and Drum Band the Pipe Major commented you can always tell the Cold War guys because of the lack of ribbons. Would it have been nice to have had a ribbon that atleast showed that you had been oconus, yeah I guess. When it comes down to it and cost-to-budget then don't bother and while you are at it do away with National Defense, always thought that was a given when you enlisted. Just do ribbons/medals/badges/tabs that show individual performance/accomplishment and/or combat related actions.
