I returned from Infantry reclassification training this past Saturday after two weeks at Camp Robinson, Arkansas. Some of my impressions regarding the training:

We had M-16A2s with AN/PEQ-2 or AN/PAQ-4 IR Laser target beams and M-68 "Surefire" optical sights. If the weapons we were using had been newer and we had had the chance to confirm our zeros on the range, we would have been tearing stuff up. With these systems and the AN/PVS-14 NVG, the modern American infantryman owns the night. I look forward to fielding these systems with the M-4 when my unit starts getting them.

M-203 is still a moneymaker and I'm still a good shot with it after all this time. We each had 6 TPT paint rounds to fire. I got 5 of 6 hits on a rusted hulk of a car. Tow gouys from my squad got to fire live HE rounds. It was the first time I had seen them used. Not as impressive as in the movies, but impressive nonetheless.

The M-249 SAW is a good weapon. I like firing it, although cleaning it is a bitch. It's moderately accurate. One of our instructors referred to it as a "money making machine."

The M-240B is the best weapon organic to the US Light Infantry Platoon, in my opinion. I had the honor and luck to fire one for its very first time (and my first time). This weapon is very, very accurate at range. I had no problem hitting a shipping container at 700 meters with every round from a 9-round burst. Think about that shipping container being about the same volume in space as a rifle team. Tight, controlled beaten zones equals heavy suppression and PKs at range.

Battle drills are battle drills and haven't changed since I was in earlier.

My land nav skills are still adequate but need work. I discussed this with my CO yeaterday and he said "Land nav is one of those things you could practice every day and still only be adequate."

So that's my past two weeks in a nutshell. Also, for any National Guardsmen contemplating taking courses at the Regional Training Institute at Camp Robinson, do yourself a favor and go. The instructors are knowledgeable and experienced.

I also have info regarding the Marksmanship Training Unit's course selection at Camp Robinson. I will be posting course info in the near future.

'Gratz for earning the coveted blue disks and cord!

I have to wait until my orders are cut awarding me the MOS before I get my cord and disks. When that happens, I'll "turn blue" in front of my unit.

I'm proud to be the third blue corder in my family to serve in the US Army. My great-great-grandfather Arnold served during the Civil War in the 10th Iowa Volunteer Infantry and my Dad served in the 36th Infantry Division during the Cold War and now, I'm serving in the 33rd BCT during the GWOT.

I'm old school. We were firing M16A1s using open sights. I never had a problem hitting the target
