I was the one that mentioned LTs and sniper school.  It has happened at least once that I know of.  A friend (not a friend of a friend of a guy I met once, btw) went straight into Ranger after IOBC and went straight through.  The only other school he needed was airborne and he had plenty of time left in his allotted 9 months.  It was a random slot that somehow or another the LTO shop got ahold of and sent him as a reward.  I don't know the details of the school, but he failed out on stalks towards the very end I think.  Another guy got a slot to RSLC in the same manner.  It is not a planned event, but they try to send LTs while they're at Benning to any school they can get them into, and a slot happened to be open.

IMO, I don't know why the Army would send Lt's to Sniper School.  At the 101st, we would send senior SPC's and Sergeants.  Lt's will not be shooters in line units, and NCO's are the ones conducting unit training in order to pass down the skills they learned at the school, so it seems like a no-brainer to not send officers.

Do you listen to yourself when you talk; or do you just fade in and out?

I can see sending an LT to RSLC but sniper is a bit of a stretch.  However, LTs and CPTs need to understand how to employ them at least, being snipers themselves does give them an advantage over junior Os that are not.  IMO trigger pullers in the E-4 and E-5 pay grades should be filling 90% of those slots.

I'd say that in the past, one of the biggest drags was that very few company commanders knew how to utilize sniper teams attached to them effectively. Usually we'd either end up being red-headed step children assigned to the support by fire element... or used as a convenient bit of extra security for the leader's recon that can be left as eyes-on the objective then forgotten. Occasionally a CO would  know how to employ us properly... usually these guys had commanded a scout platoon as a lieutenant. Very few other officers would actually take the time to listen to what we had to say when we would attempt to explain what capabilities we brought to them though. Of course, that was back in the days when the MTU was out of sight/out of mind and conventional "thinkers" ran the Army.

For some reason, despite the rennaisance of precision shooting that has occured, I suspect the Army will return to the above situation a few years after we are out of the current counter insurgency conflict.

The only officers that I know of going to sniper school were foreign, this Brazilian LT exchange student going there, he most likely was going there to learn the techniques from our people to bring back and teach them to his pupils down in Brazil later on as cadre at their sniper school or something.  I saw this on the Discovery Channel's hourlong look at Fort Benning's Sniper School so it has nothing to do with Ranger School at all; but IMO only those who are mission essential for sniper postings should be sent to that school in the first place.

Maybe that all stems from my problem with Badge finders and the like that seem to permeate the Army.  Yep, I had a bad experience down in Panama with a one who had all the Hooah schools yet not one iota of knowledge and field craft when it came to applying it out in the jungle; I agree only send those who are going to use those skill sets and apply them constructively not wear them on their uniforms for inspections up at the Old Guard.

Okay, that's my midday .02

I'm Surprised Panama's still sea level, after all the Push Ups I did down there.
