And if you were in Berlin from the end of WW2 up to the end of the Cold War didn't you get the Occupation Medal?  To this day you still get the Overseas Service Ribbon for Germany.

I can see the arguments on double awards, but for crying out loud, why are we crying that soldiers are being recognized?  Furthermore, there are alot more campaign medals out there these days because OPTEMPO is up over 400% since Bill Clinton took office.  There is simply more stuff going on then there was in the past.

I notice that noone has come out and said anything about the SSI-FWTS.  Is that just more issued crap, or did you earn that?  By the logic of several members in this thread, the combat patch should be no more, and to those that have them, they should be meaningless cloth instead of a badge of honor.

What say you?

I for one will not complain about the so-called "combat patch". The guys who were there earned the right to have that distinction no matter what job they did. Clerks and jerks are exposed to the same dangers as infantrymen. (Although the new Combat Action Badge is carrying it a little too far IMHO.)

The Warrant Officer is a highly specialized expert and trainer who by gaining progressive levels of expertise and leadership operates, maintains, administers, and manages the Army’s equipment, support activities, or technical systems for an entire career.

WTF? Who's Mr. Pillow Pants? - Clerks 2

Hey, Mark - Remember what the first campaign in DESERT STORM was called?

Yep... Desert Shield, we got a star on the southwest asia service ribbon for it. I felt that it was appropriate to note but Im damn glad there isnt a Desert Sheild Award

Hey, dont get me wrong guys, I even think its kind of dumb that we have the two Kuwait Liberation awards.. I think the only one that should be around is the one FROM Kuwait because I think its acknowledgement from the country that was liberated. The Saudi one just seems stupid.

Far too many of these New Defense and Service Medals are nothing more than eye candy. I believe it is a Marketing scheme. Medals just for Serving Overseas, Cold War Medals, c'mon, evidently the DOD thinks that every Military Person needs a Medal. When Medals are given instead of earned they lose their meaning. What's next, Badges. Are they going to give everyone who goes to BAC some kind of "I was there Jump Wings" badge, even if they don't graduate? Of course I am being a smart ass, but just trying to prove my point.

Oh yeah I forgot something, I don't remember what year, but anyone recall the "Cold War Service Certificate", I and probably 3/4 million prior Service Personnel received. What a meaningless piece of paper that was.

A lot of the Service Awards are nothing but eye candy, but they also recognise those who served in a war-zone.  Remember, a lot of this dates back to WW I and II where the majority of the soldiers only received a campaign medal.  It was a visible way to identify those who served in the various war-zones, and those who stayed in the rear with the beer. Same theory on combat patches, arrowheads, and combat starts on jump wings.

I have no problem with campaign awards, and wish management would issue fewer PCS/ETS/deployment awards.

The SWASM campaign is called "Defense of Saudi Arabia"

The Saudi medal LOOKS cooler...
