All right, folks, my 15yo son can't decide between navy and marines.  Recruiters apparently don't talk to kids until they are 17.  He would like to be learning about both so he can make an informed decision between now and then.  What can ya'll tell him as to why he should choose one over the other?

He wants to do a four year enlistment, go to college and get a civil engineering degree and then go back in, maybe make it a career.

I'm proud of him, but I want him to pick the one that fits best.

Thanks for any info

cough, cough   Why not go Army?  I hear those paratroopers and Rangers are amazing soldiers!

Well, he says he is considering any branch, but is leaning toward navy/marine.

I would love for him to be Airborne.  I almost married Airborne.  But he says he doesn't think he could do what he wants through Airborne.

He says sniper or cobra attack helicopter pilot.

What do ya'll say?

If he eventually wants a Civil Engineer BE, why not go into the Army Corps of Engineers?  I have a younger Cousin who was in the Corps of Engineers, put in 20 years, got his Engineering BE while still in the Service, retired as a Sgt Major and is now a Highway Supervisor for the Colorado DOT. Military retirement and big salary. I currently have a Nephew in the Combat Engineers, has re-upped and is planning a similar career. Both saw Combat, one in Nam and the other in Iraq, but that is always a possibility anytime one serves in the Military, regardless of Branch.

I agree about his age, but if he were at least sixteen they'd probably start talking to him more.  If you have a recruiting station close by that he feels comfortable with, he might want to see if he can participate in any activities they offer (Marines will do Physical Training with their hopefuls) and any other activities the recruiting station Marines/Soldiers are doing.  He should also ask if he can talk to any new enlistees out of those recruiting stations (the ones waiting to ship out) and see what they like about their contract and choice of service.  This might help tide him over until he's at least a year older and can start working with a recruiter.

Navy or Marines.....hmmmm, I guess if he wants to take it in the butt then it's Navy. If he wants to give it to the Navy guys then you go Marines.

If you're not like that, then Army Airborne is the only option.
