Coming Home Homecoming is the easy part. It’s the journey to come that’s the challenge.Beyond the homecoming parades and yellow ribbons, a quiet struggle rages on the homefront as the roughly one million men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan begin to rotate out of combat. But how much do we all understand about what these service members have experienced and the kind of support they now need? Lester Host hosts “Coming Home,” a one-hour document.ry which premieres Sunday, June 26 at 9 p.m. ET. “Coming Home” begins and ends with homecomings. But we learn that the war does not end when our veterans arrive in the U.S. -- for these men and women, it is just the beginning of a long road home....... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8344656/ ________________________________________________________________ This show will highlight the efforts by the Wound Warrior Project to assist those men and women of our armed forces who have been severely injured during the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other hot spots around the world. Many of the injuries are traumatic amputations, gunshot wounds, burns and blast injuries that will retire these brave warriors from military service. These wounded soldiers will return to civilian life minus one or more limbs, or with serious wounds or disfiguring scars, and will face greater challenges today obtaining assistance and finding opportunities that would enable them to provide for themselves and their families. http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ I urge all of you to view the Project's proposal for creation of a Service-member Group Disability Insurance Program (SGDI) that would award a one time, lump sum payment of $50,000 to seriously disabled veterans upon the determination, made in a stateside military hospital, of a severe injury. This program would be created as a rider on the existing Service-member Group Life Insurance (SGLI) policy and would be structured similarly to what is known in the private sector as an "Accidental Death and Dismemberment" policy but would not include an "accidental death" provision. http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/pages.php?catid=211&pageid=680 I urge you to support our wounded warriors by contacting your Senators and Representatives on the creation of this much needed legistation.

| Heard from Senator Dewine (Ohio) office's, and I am happy to report that I stand corrected !!! The legistation has been signed into law. Traumatic Injury Protection for Wounded Service Members The men and women who serve in our Armed Forces are better equipped with life-saving protective gear than ever before. As a result, the Global War on Terrorism has resulted in far fewer deaths but has seen an increase in traumatic injury that will forever change the lives of the men and women in uniform. These injuries come at great cost to families in travel and housing expenses during convalescence, in retrofitting homes to accommodate handicap upgrades, and in adjusting to a new lifestyle. As such, Senator DeWine was instrumental in efforts to create a new “Traumatic Injury Protection” insurance rider to Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance policies that would be retroactive to October 7, 2001, covering all traumatic injuries incurred since the beginning of the war in Afghanistan. This new rider would provide an immediate payment, from $25,000 to $100,000, to service members who sustain traumatic injuries on active duty. The President signed the House version of this bill into law on May 11, 2005. http://dewine.senate.gov/

Does this Law in any way affect future compensation from the VA?

The Wounded Warrior Project is an amazing project and I encourage those who can, please "buy" a backpack for our wounded. When they first arrive in the states, they are usually still dressed in their battle uniforms (what has not been cut off). The backback provides them with toiletries, warm up suit and clean underwear and socks. Sometimes this is all they will get. If you cannot to afford to buy a backpack, they do take donations towards the purchase of their items.
