Just a quick question for any recruiters out there. I am making a medal display case for my father in law. I have his DD214 and confirmed all his medals, but I can't figure out what enlisted branch insignia he would have. He was supply in Vietnam but then spent the last 11 years of his career and retired as a recruiter. His last DD214 shows MOS 00R40 Recruiter/Retention NCO. Didn't know if recruiters changed there Class A collar branch insignia or if they kept their original MOS, which for him I guess would be the Quartermaster emblem.

I could be wrong so if someone has a definative answer, feel free to do an on the spot correction but as far as Ive ever seen, recruiters retain their primary MOS insignia. Yes.. he'd be wearing the QuarterMaster insignia then.

Is there a difference between a career recruiter and a "detailed" recruiter (i.e., a soldier detailed to recruiting command who then goes back to the 'regular army' after his/her recruiting tour)? BTW, wouldn't Michele (Blacksmith Six) know the answer to this? I believe she commanded a company in a recruiting command.

When was he assigned to Recruiting Command? During the early 70's recruiters wore Branch Unassigned brass. Must be pretty hard to find these days.

Looks like he was a recruiter from about 1978 untill 1988 when he retired. DD214 says his primary MOS is 00R40 Recruiting/Retention NCO. This would be easier if I could just ask him, but it's supposed to be a surprise to put in his den he just finished. HH6 did a covert ops (not bad for an ex 91T I guess)and "aquired" his box of military junk (doesn't everyone have one). I pretty much had to reorder most of the badges and medals since they were corroded. Wanted to put a sta brite branch insignia in there so it wouldn't dull on him. In the box I found a quartermaster branch insignia and another one with some kind of sham shield on it (which I always thought was AG branch). His last MACOM was Recruiting Battalion, New Cumberland, PA, USAREC. Anyone know what SSI they use? Thanks for any help.

Not sure but I think that when I went in, 1976, recruiters wore the AG branch insignia. I don't recall if they wore a SSI, but I would think it would be the AG SSI if they did. If you can't find out then I suggest to make your best judgement, but set it up so that he can make some minor corrections if necessary.

There is a difference between detailed and branched recruiters. Detailed guys are and wear the insignia of their branch, but full-time recruiters get an MOS change to AG. With over 10 years in recruiting, I'd say he definetly retired as a career recruiter. The correct branch is AG. If I were at home, I'd be HAPPY to send you all of my USAREC SSI's, but you probably need it quicker than I could get it out. To get an idea when you look, it's a blue patch with the Liberty Bell in White, with RECRUITING on top, outlined in red. One note on the SSI, it has changed. In the early recruiting days, the lettering on top of the patch actually a tab, then later they combined it to one patch. I bet he may have worn something like that in the 70's, but I am pretty sure that by the mid 80's it was one combined patch. Just an additional detail, if you can find an old recruiting patch/tab.
