1SG Welch, C/2/504. Easily the best NCO I've ever known. He has forgotten more about leadership than I'll ever know. Didn't give me the AR-15 I probably deserved, but got plenty of extra duty from me.

SFC Doody C/2/504. Best PSG ever.

There are many more, but their leadership and guidance made me what I am today.

I will not post his name since he is still active duty out there but he was my section chief back when I was a young PFC/SPC. I hated his guts for being a a$$ sometimes I though but looking back he was doing the right thing. I learned so many thing from him I don't know where to start.

I wanted to pop in on him up at Bragg this Christmas while I'm on leave but I don't know if his unit is deployed or not.

CSM LOUIS P HATCHER WAS THE BEST NCO I'VE EVER WORKED FOR .HE WAS THE BIGGEST MEANEST, BADDEST MAN I ve ever known. He fought on Hamberger Hill and was one of six troopers left from his company alive at the end of the battle. He was hard on us,but made sure we were ready to go to war.The troops while fearing him still were proud to have him for our CSM

I would have to say the NCO that impressed the most upon me was SSG John Patterson. This guy knew how to take care of his soldiers and was not afraid to do so. I can remember being sent to the field the day that my wife was suppose to give birth. Platoon Sgt was a real ass about the whole thing and said that I needed to be in the field. Wife went into labor about 7 hours into the field problem. SSG Patterson called PLt SGt.. nothing happened.... called 1st Sgt.. couldnt be reached.. He went all the way up the chain of command until someone could be reached... unfortunately for my Plt Sgt, it was the BN Commander. Plt Sgt was very nice to me after that whole situation. I think that there were some other issues that SSG Patterson brought to light that was being covered up. Its NCO's like SSG Patterson that make the Army go round.

SFC Henderson my last PSG at Bragg. (Understand he made CSM before Retirement!) He was an all around Leader of Paratroopers. Cut no slck when it was required and did not play the petty BS Games many others did. Always took care of the Men and made sure we all looked after one another. "FIDO!!"

Saw him on the History Channel a couple times talking about GWI and Panama.

SSG, now retired 1SG, Jimmy Akuna. Second generation paratrooper and eighteen plus months with November Company Rangers in Vietnam, he was my SL for most of the time I was in Italy. Some of you may have had him as a Blackhat and DS in the early to mid-80s. He was outstanding in the field and always looked strac in garrison.

SSG, now 1SG retired, Watson(can't recall his first name). I think he was also a second gen paratrooper, and was DomRep with the 82nd and the Airborne Brigade of the 1st Cav in Vietnam. He was also 36th Abn. Bde. TXNG after Vietnam. He was also outstanding in the field and I learned more about being a paratrooper from him than probably anyone else(although I was too thick headed to realize it at the time).
