Well, you had no way of knowing, I've gotten smarter since then. []

We are also promoting young NCOs so fast that there are PSGs out there who have never been machine gunners or weapons squad leaders, so employing the M14s as a Platoon level asset(an idea that I agree with) probably won't happen, and they will end up being another under-utilized asset. Another big problem is the fact that these are not accurized weapons, and they are being issued without any type of optics (ACOG, etc.)or bipod. Maximum effective range for an M14 with iron sites and no bipod is 460 meters. Max effective with a bipod is 700 meters.

I'm sorry to hear that Steve. It's a damn shame that these rifles don't have optics, match ammo, or a bipod. Without those items, and the way the rifles are being employed with the maneuver squads, I really don't see how they will be much of an improvement over a standard M-16A2. I hope I am wrong.

BTW: I saw where our old Bn Commander, LTC David Barno, is now LTG Barno and commanding in Afghanistan. Well, have a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and best wishes for you and your platoon on your upcoming deployment.

On March 27, 2003, a soldiers assigned to A Company 2/505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division provide security while the unit searches for a large cache of weapons in the Kohi Sofi region of Afghanistan. The soldiers are tasked to locate the weapons which could be ultimately be used against U.S. Forces personnel deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. A good, solid ACOG 4X is just fine as a GP scope.

I was going to point out that all of the photo I have seen of Troopers carrying the M14 in the DM role has had them using the ACOG optics. Maybe that is just in the 82nd, which are the only ones I have seen photos of with the rifle. Gimlet stay safe on your deployment.

It they were out there, they wouldn't stick out like an M-14.

For anyone who does not know alot about Patrols on the DMZ in the early 80;s , we had six man patrol teams..everyone had a job..one of them was the "Designated Marksman", we also had alternate jobs and one was the Alternate marksman( in case the dm went down)The DM on the team had a regular m16 but on night patrols he also had the mounted NVscope on his m16. The other Team members were....pointman,Compass man( me )..Designated Marksman....commo man...Patrol leader....Combat medic..   Katusa( Korean soldier for interogation). The DM had to be Expert Qualified and prove it on the range often.
