'Back in the day' in division we did have DM's on paper anyway. Each rifle plt. was assigned 2 M14 sniper rifles (might have been designated M21), but in my experience anyway no one was ever assigned these weapons and they weren't ever taken to the field or used in live-fires etc. We did have guys who attended the Marine sniper school at Lejuene and a sniper course run by the 82nd (or XVIII Corps), but they were never assigned these weapons... Also back then, there were no BN Scout-snipers. Scout Plts consisted of 6 3-man jeep/gun teams plus HQ element.

Great idea!
I think that fine marksmanship training went by the wayside years ago-
at least from the platoon level. Yeah, we all went to Quals and some
did really good but there are those who stood out as exceptional. It
was a shame to not put their talents to use.

We all appreciate someone who has the knack for doing things precisily (sp) but those that can pickup a long rifle and drill sub M0A holes at 100 or drill a 500 yard target over and over again - putting them where they count - now that warms the cockeles of my heart!!!

All in favor of SDMs.

I think the squad should stick with 5.56 (I know, this is a change for me.)

I also think that some SR-25s by KAC with 7.62s should be in Wpns Plt (or sqd).

DM should be an attachment at the squad level. Should be 5.56, using an M16 based weapon.

The M14 is a maintainance nightmare in any accurrized format. Mounting the scope is an abortion compared to the M16 flattop. M80 ammo tends to be more inaccurate than M855, doesn't even compare to Mk262. S/F...Ken M

I agree Ken, anything at squad level should be 5.56mm and M-16 based. At the Platoon level, it would be advantageous IMO to use 7.62mm rifle such as the Mk 11 Mod O (SR25), or perhaps the SOCOM M-25, with military match/sniper ammo such as M118, M118LR, or M852. Whatever rifle that is used at the Platoon level in the weapon's squad should have at least equal maximum effective range as the M-240 machinegun IMO.

Yes and the fleet is moving toward this too.

Wow!! That's really stupid IMO. Who dreamed that abortion up, Shinseki?

Just last month we were issued two M-14s per platoon for our deployment in January. A guy in first, and a guy in 3rd squad are taking extra sniper and marksmenship classes currently. The guy carrying the M-14 in our squad will also be carrying his M4, so the squad will have the same level of fire power. After messing with his M-14, I would love to carry one into combat with me.
