Here in Iraq our LRSC is doing just about everything: training, surveillance, sniping, DA, tower guard, reconnaissance, convoy security, you name it.  Can't expand or be more especific due to OPSEC considerations.  They had to beef up our MTOE since as you know we are not equipped as a regular line airborne infantry company.  FM 7-93 has literally gone out the window in this AO, we execute whatever our higher tells us to.

Whatever it takes to accomplish the mission.  I'm glad that you are able to give updates.  Take care of yourself and your men, Sir.  Take care of the tangos, and get back safely!

JMK, we get 30 minutes of satellite internet a day if we have the time to get to the computers.  We also have a satellite phone service to call home.  AATW!

Gee, I'm glad we busted ass getting you those manuals.  Hey, but on the flip side, atleast you have them now at your disposal.  Thats whats important.

Mitch, we are using FM 7-93 tactics, however, what we have been forced to do due to the low intensity nature of this insurgency is combine it with FM 7-8 stuff so the tangos we pull surveillance on don't live to fight another day.  All within the limitations of our current MTOE that is.

FM 7-93 is based on high intensity conventional warfare.  We are not facing the North Korean Army here, we are facing tangos that operate mainly in small groups in their own backyard and who follow no rules of warfare.  This is a "non-linear" counter insurgency/guerilla war.  They wear no uniforms and their weapons are mainly mortars, rockets, RPGs, AKs, RPKs, SA7s, and the dreaded IEDs of different shapes and sizes.  I knew from the get go we were not going to be doing traditional "no contact LRS" here.  Due to all the DA we are doing here former 75th hooahs in our company are worth their weight in gold.

The manuals are still useful bud.  Thanks for your help.  Actually at Ft. Bliss I got a hold of all of them in about 5 CDs and we did not have to print any of them since the company owned plenty of lap tops for viewing the files.  AATW!

Rey, at the Airborne Awards we heard briefings from a brigade commander from the 101st and the 82d and their LRS units are doing it all just as you and I discussed. I think that it might be time to go back to the Ranger company formation like the Army did with all the LRRP units in Vietnam. Lets face it if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and fights like a Ranger...it
