We know that the KIA of "Chief" Carlson will probably not wind up in any paper, anywhere.
We consider him one of US, of course and in his passing, we honor his Duty,Honor, and Country to this great nation of ours with a salute, and say "Carry on Ranger".

Another good man lost, but what a helluva a man. He was and is indicative of
the type out there risking it all.
ERIC HANEY, CSM (Ret)
Subject: KIA - MSG (Ret) William "Chief" Carlson
All, I received a call from my brother this weekend confirming that Chief
was KIA up in the Konar province on the Afghanistan side of the border. He
recently retired out of the "unit" at Bragg and was working for the CIA
hunting for UBL once again. He was at a small base found/opened/started in
May 02 by my brother to hunt for UBL, named Fire Base Puchi Gar (Pastun for
"Dog Shit").
Chief was a remarkable warrior. The toughest SOB I've met. We were squad
leaders together in 3/C/1/75 in the mid 1980's and went to SF at the same
time. Chief was famous in battalion for refusing to wear socks with his
jungle boots, even during ruck marches if you can imagine that. I recall
one day the battalion was on some sort of gut check foot marching test (one
of 1st SOCOM's great ideas!) where we forced march for 5 straight days
around HAAF increasing the mileage each day. The idea was to see how
continued marches would impact our mission capability. Yea, it sucked!
After the 15 miler Chief walked into my barracks room and dropped his ruck,
it hit the floor like a ton of bricks! I asked him what the hell he was
carrying and he said, ""F"ing O'Brian's Ruck!" Chief had noticed one of
his studs, SPC O'Brian falling behind during the march and made him switch
out rucks since Chief's wasn't as heavy (55 lb standard load). What Chief
didn't realize was O'Brian was training for SFQC at the time and had loaded
his ruck sack with sand bags, to the tune of about 90 lbs!!! It was
hilarious!
Chief's dedication to finding the man responsible for 9/11 personifies a
saying we often said in C Co, 1/75 - "Some men fear wars, some wars fear
men."
Many of you may know Chief from his time in 1st Bat or with 1st SFG in Oki,
JRTC SOF DET, or the unit. He left behind a wonderful wife and great
children. I ask that you offer a silent prayer to him and his family.
"Here's to us and those like us, damn few left!" Hope this note finds you
all well. V/R Steve

Two Contractors Working for the CIA Killed in an Ambush in Afghanistan, the Agency Says
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON Oct. 28 — Two contractors working for the CIA were killed in an ambush in Afghanistan, the agency said Tuesday.
William Carlson, 43, of Southern Pines, N.C., and Christopher Glenn Mueller, 32, of San Diego, were "tracking terrorists operating in the region" of Shkin, a village in eastern Afghanistan, when they were killed Saturday, the CIA said in a statement.
Both were veterans of military special operations forces, the CIA said. - end
Well done RIP.
