I have a question for any Navy history buffs:
In the movie, "The Bridges at Toko Ri", set during the Korean war, the helicopter pilot, played by Mickey Rooney, was an enlisted man, a Chief Petty Officer, to be specific. My question is, is this historically accurate? I know Navy fixed-wing pilots (and Army, too) have almost always been officers, but how about helicopters?
Other nations have enlisted pilots, I believe. I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the British army some helicopter pilots are NCOs rather than officers, but I'd never heard of that in the US.

From what I have found thus far, there were enlisted helicopter pilots. "The Bridges at Toko RI" book by James Michener was based upon his experiences as a war correspondent.

I will post what I find.
