There is a long thread on Tactical Forums that discusses this. *

* If its not kosher to post their thread, I'll pull the link.

Why RickDog, judging from your sources, are you an old NRA High Power shooter too? [thup]

Seriously, I want to recall that Eugene Stoner was asked once why he settled on the 5.56x45mm for his AR, he said because it was the first caliber that he had used, inferring on not ruling out any "upgrade" for the future. Also recall that the Army had toyed around with using the 7mm in the 1950s or 60s (the 7mm being one of the best "flat" shooting rounds).

Would love to see the ballistics run on the 6.8mm before doing an IMHO.

Brian,

In 1957 Army officials from Continental Army Command (CONARC) contacted Eugene Stoner and requested that he build a scaled down version of his AR-10 weighing less than 7 lbs and using a high velocity .22 caliber round. The only other requirement they gave him was that it must penetrate an M-1 steel pot at 500 yards. Eugene Stoner then took the new .222 Remington Special and slightly changed some of the case dimensions so that a little extra powder could be loaded and voila, the .223 Remington was born. It's ballistics were virtually identical to the .222 Remington Magnum, but with less chamber pressure. The .222 Remington Magnum has been developed in concert with Springfield Armory in the mid 50's as part of Project SALVO.

That 6.8mm is very nice. As soon as they release this cartridge to civilian shooters I'm going to get a 6.8mm upper for my M-4 clone.

If anyone wants to see some AR pics that will make you drool, check out this two page thread:

but that's the problem...will they release the cartridge. They may do what they've done with that FN-P90 Round and classify it Military/Police only and not let us have them.
I've seen at high power matches an individual who built his own 6.8-ish AR. He had a barrel custom made and built every cartridge. He also drilled and tapped a hole in the bolt carrier and installed a fixed operating rod handle and cut a groove in the upper behind the ejection port so the op rod handle could pass. Very very nice gun. He would only bring it out for the 600 yd matches and kick butt!
