Guys -

I've been offered an unarmed contractor position at Camp Freedom / Freedom Rest in Baghdad.

Can any of you share any open source info on that location?

I'm looking for feedback like:

It's the safest place to be over there
It's safer than most locations over there
It's about as safe as anything else over there
It's not so safe, but still tolerable for a paratrooper
Pretty dangerous location
Stay Home

Feel free to expound on the above.

Waddaya say, Troops?  Please respond to:

Thanks!

I have to agree on that one. While I have absolutely no information on the specific location or job, Unarmed is a big No-Go in my opinion. Any Security position in Iraq where they do not allow you to be more than an overpaid mall Security Guard does not sound great to me.
Heck it could be the safest place in Iraq, could be you will sit behind other guys with lots of guns and never have to leave the compound, but...

KBR security coordinators are unarmed. There function is to liason with the military on security issues. If you are on the base your main concern is incoming and a weapon wont help there. Now if you have to convoy just tailgate the  nearest hummer with a crew served weapon like I do

Stay Safe,Phillip

Guys -

I appreciate the OPINIONS reference being unarmed, Brothers.  I share that opinion, which is why I posted this thread.

What I'm looking for is DETAILS, based on PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN THEATER.  Hooah?

My awesome woman (the "lovely lass!") doesn't like the idea, to answer the previous question posed my Mortarman.

Truthfully, I don't like it much either, which is why I'm trying to gather info on this.

Thanks again for the help and I look forward to further postings/e-mail messages.

JR,

Just putting my .02 cents in.  I haven't been there but my wife was for the Coalational Provisional Authority.  Even she carried an M-4 and a Glock when outside the wire.  Inside the wire she always had her Glock on.  I couldn't imagine ever going overseas in a place like that without a weapon.

If you accept the position best of luck to you and you will be added to the prayer list.

I asked my friend who is over there, and preparing to leave.  He said:

"freedom’s rest, the mortar magnet. not much threat from VBIED’s or small arms attack.  folks run down the road, no one carries or wears body armor, of course its a different story outside the t-walls.

they have a big PX, food, pool, etc... really not much to do. does it suck—what part of the middle east doesn’t but it is a decent place to kick back for awhile, never been there myself but we use to send folks across town to get some down tme for a few days."
