Okay, I drive past these places every town I go to.

What does the American Legion do? What's a Lions Club or something along those lines? I've always wondered...

Still learning,

www.legion.org

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, war-time veterans organization. A community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments -- one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Unfortunately I am not as active as I should be wih my local post. Our post does a lot of fund raising for the local community, i.e. local library, children's groups.

As with any organization, it's what YOU make of it.

Plastic, the Legion has specific requirements for membership, although if you have a parent that is a member I think you can get in that way.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American GI.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Huh- well you learn something new everyday. I always thought the difference between VFW and AL was that any former soldier could join AL regardless of then they served whereas VFW had limited windows of service (hence, it's name). So, since that's not the case, then where does the average joe who didn't serve during hostilities go?

Well, for the average joe who is a paratrooper the 82nd Airborne Division Association is just waiting with open arms.[8D]
