Amen to that.

Thanks for all of the help. Some of your answers are helping me as well. I plan on joining the guard. I just need to get in shape first. I turned 39 on May 14th and I want to get a comission. I think direct comission appears to be the only route for me.

If you can get in shape quick you can try to go through the accelerated OCS it's 7 or 8 weeks long. I hear it's a real meat grinder though and you have to be in good shape and have your stuff together already.

One thing, direct commission does not involve OCS. If you are prior service with at least a four year degree you can join the NG and apply for a commission directly without OCS or ROTC. I believe this only applies if your are going in the same branch you were in while on active duty. You will have to attend the Basic Course for your branch. If going in as an Infantry officer that means Ft. Benning. But you do not have to attend BCT, AIT or OCS. This is the route taken by RangerRios.

Well I am hoping to bypass OCS. Here are my reasons: 1. I have 3 years prior service as an 11B1P and I plan on being an Infantry Officer 2. (and the big reason) I am going to have to live through a shitstorm when my boss finds out that I am going to be gone for the 16 weeks or whatever it is of IOBC. I doubt that I could go through the 7-8 weeks of OCS AND the 16 weeks of IOBC and still be employed. In fact, maybe the point is moot because when I tell her that I am gone for 3 1/2 months I may not be employed anyway. LOL! I realize that being an Infantry Officer in the guard means that there is a 99.9% chance that I will have to go to the Sandbox but I could bring a shitstorm down on her for being fired for that. OCS and IOBC are different animals though. 3. I make a lot of money. This means that Parapete has lots of toys most of which have payments attached to them. Living on 1st LT pay, which will amount to slightly under 1/4 of my regular pay for 3 1/2 months is going to be an *extreme* hardship for me. I literally cannot afford to extend that hardship another 8 weeks. Some of you might be saying, well what are you going to do if you get deployed? Well obviously in that case, I will have to sell all of my toys. The point is I am trying to avoid that, and if I can put off delpoyment long enough, then I can take the time to sell some of my stuff without having to sell all of it.
