I had a reunion recently of all my old buddies in the 82nd. One of them is 43 and is still hardcore, gung ho, and in great physical shape. He really wants in to the Florida National Guard. Can he get into OCS on a waiver? Can he get a direct commission with a waiver?

He has Prior military experience (of course) and fought in Grenada.

Enquiring minds want to know?

43 and wants back in?

I am sure you want a REAL answer.......but I saw too old. At 43 you can be a Grand Father......YIKES!

Someone needs to go out and find a recruiter and him him / her be a regular here............soooooo many recruiting questions.

Pete, if he was trying to go active duty you would take his age and subtract the amount of time of his prior service. If he was 34 years and 364 days old at the time of his new service in he could do it. The NG and Reserves allow you to be older but I don't recall what the age limit is. He can get a direct commission if he already has at least a bachelor's degree. He will then be required to attend OCS, but he must be able to pass the PT test based on the 18 year old scale. Down and dirty, that's the skinny.

So lets use me as an example.

38 years old

10 1/2 total time served

8 1/2 active if that matters.

38

-

10 1/2

26 1/2

Even at my age I could still go back in?

509Trooper,

He could easily pass the PT test. In fact, he could probably come close to maxing it even in the 18 y/o age group. He is lean mean and ripped. He has been doing push ups and sit ups every morning since he got out (in 1985).

Now *I* on the other hand spent too much time eating and drinking at biker runs so I need to get my ass in shape before I can get back in.

But I do need a for sure answer on this, maybe I should just send him to the nearest recruiter.

He lives in Inverness, Florida.

509 is correct.  If his age minus his active time leaves a number larger than 34, there are age waivers.  And, the National Guard is a different animal, so he might have a better chance at getting waiver and OCS in the NG than the reserves.  We do OCS boards on a monthly basis, and it's announced as to if it will be open for both reserve and active.  Usually it's active only.  I don't know how the NG does it.  I recommend that he talk to a National Guard recruiter.

Joel, you are eligible to come back in.  I could hook that up for you!

Well, I'll jump in with my 2 cents.

In the GA ARNG (and I believe it's the same for all because it goes through the National Guard Bureau) the cut off for OCS is 30 without a waiver.  Currently they will give you a waiver if
