My son and I will be watching. They dont cover WWII well in school. I "ask" him to watch, least the younger generation forget the how and why. With all the negative things our Modern day press releases, it really gets confusing to a 13 year old boy.

Shows like discovery show and explain things from a non bias view and just the facts.

I guess my point being, it gets difficult to explain why things are happening with the way the news distorts things and makes us out to be the bad guys.

One minute he hears one thing then the next it's a complete opposite story.

Any of you guys that have kids know what I'm talking about.....

Sorry for the rant...

We'll be watching

  • Did anyone see this? It was about a group of 507 troopers (about a 150 or so) who landed way off course south-east of Carentan and took it upon themselves to defend this small village until relieved (starts with a G put don't remeber right off hand). By June 12 the 17th SS Panzergrendier division was in the area and tried to take the village back. They finally succeeded after being repulsed several times but with heavy casualties. Unbeknownst to the 101st this small band was directly helping them take and hold Carentan by diverting significant portions of the 17th SS at the time this same division was counter-attacking to retake Carentan. When the Germans finally overran the village (about 30 troopers managed to escape back to the 101st lines) they proceeded to massacre the wounded troopers who had to be left behind (SS bastards that they were) as well as quite a few of the towns people for actively aiding our troopers. The towns people did everything they could to help our troopers while they were there at considerable risk (as played out) to themselves. The thing that gets me is I consider myself about as knowledgable as anyone on WW2 in Europe in general and Normandy in particular yet I never heard of this little battle! Anyone else heard about this before?...

A personal note... I was in New Orleans to visit the D-Day museum when this came on and happened to be down in the hotel bar having a beer or three when all these actors who played in the show came into the bar to watch the 'premiere'! Apparently it was done through the D-Day museum there. In addition, Hugh Ambrose, Steven's son was there

RedDevil, I missed that! Pretty pissed off as the local cable company had the times wrong on its showtime. I had not heard of this massacre either and was pretty surprised to hear about it.

I caught part of that show. I suspect that because of the misdrops there are numerous stories similar to this one that have never been fully told. The sad thing is that with the death rate of WWII vets some of these stories may never be publicized. Is anyone else upset that The History Channel has Alec Baldwin as the host of this week's specials.
