Hey,
Can anyone give me a definitive yes/no if Air Force Security Forces personell can attend Army Ranger School? I've spoken to some AF guys who've said they "heard" of some doing it yet not sure. However, I saw a photo of an AF guy with the tab on his shoulder. If anyone has got anything I would appreciate it much.

As for Security Focces wearing the Ranger Tab, I have no idea. MMC could best answer that one. As for seeing an AF guy with a tab, that would most likely be CCT (Combat Controler) or Para Rescue. We had CCT's assigned to our unit, they wore AF rank on their sleeves, equilivant Army rank on their collar and our patch and tab on their shoulder. Hope that helps.

I believe that they can. I met a CRUSTY ole Senior Master SGT (AF his whole career) who was security forces. Went to ranger school, and had a purple heart from Grenada and Panama...had a ranger patch, CIB, Air assault, Jump wings and an 82nd patch on the right shoulder.

I know that it can be done, but I don't know the specifics.

hope that this helps

Clarification:

Security Forces DO wear the Ranger tab. Their guys have been going to the school for quite some time. FYI - Last I knew, the USAF Liaision at Ft Benning was a Security Forces SMSgt who was also an instructor at Ranger School.

There are far more USAF TACPs and SPs (I refuse to call them SF, sorry...) who have been to Ranger school than there are CCTs and PJs. I have only seen one each CCT and PJ wearing a Ranger tab, and the PJ earned it while serving as a TACP.

USAF CCTs are NOT assigned to US Army units, and they do NOT wear US Army patches. They will be the first to tell you that, too.

Tactical Air Control Party and Combat Weather personnel are the ONLY USAF personnel directly assigned to US Army units. The Air Liaison Officer (ALO) and Staff Weather Officer (SWO) are part of the Commander's Special Staff, and their supporting Teams of USAF troops are there to privide direct support to the US Army during combat operations. Those TACP and Combat Weather personnel are the only USAF personnel authorized to wear US Army patches.

Reference wearing US Army rank on the collar: They may have done it, and it may have been effective at the time, but it's definitely unauthorized by the USAF. US Army guys are smart enough (or should be), so you can tell them once or twice and they get it, anyway. The only time I could see it being useful is if you're dealing with foreign soldiers who have no clue about USAF rank. Personally, the times I've been in that situation, I have worn the foreign soldier's rank on a pocket tab.

He shouldn't have been wearing a CIB if he was USAF his whole career... The US Army only awards the CIB to 11 and 18 series MOS personnel. Anything else is unauthorized, EVEN IF HE WAS RIGHT THERE PERFORMING ALONGSIDE AN INFANTRYMAN IN COMBAT. Which may have been the case.

Now that your question has graciously been answered, go to the Reception/Inprocessing threads and fill out an intro, then start knocking out some push-ups...

Are they still running that course? I tried to send two of my guys around 3 years ago, and they cancelled it for lack of participation... Pissed me off, actually...
