Scrib, I think think the events that happened September 11 was probably the main influence. I guess what really did it was watching all of our Soldiers over in Iraq and Afghanistan putting their asses on the line to keep the USA safe from terrorism. So, I thought I had better do the same.
Some would probably ask, "Why didn't you join during the first Gulf War?" or "Why didn't you join the day after the terrorists flew those planes into the two towers". I really don't know the answer to this. Back in the early 90s maybe I had a little bit of a yellow streak down my back or I was just plain un-patriotic. It just took time for me to finally accept the fact that all these years I have took but never gave back.
My parents thought because I was going to college for computer support, I would try to find an MOS within the Army related to my degree. You should have seen the expression on their faces when I told them I am going into the Infantry with dedicated Airborne training.
There was one other influence that affected my decision to join the Army. I had read the book "Soldier" by LTC Anthony B. Herbert. If you want to read a good book about a soldier in the US Army, then this is the book to get. I hope to model my career in the Army after this guy.
