EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT AIRBORNE AND SPECIAL OPERATIONS FORCES BUT WERE AFFRAID TO ASK (all unclassified information). More and more young hooahs are turning to "paratrooper.net" for information on how they can serve as paratroopers. We mainly get questions about the Army but over the past year we have answered questions about our sister services too. I just wanted to post some links here that could point those future young "hooahs" in the right direction; we could refer them to this string. If you guys would like to add something to this list feel free. I begin with "Army" info. For soldiers already serving I guess our best advice is for them to put in a "DA Form 4187" for "jump school" and hope for the best; or wait until it is time to "re-up." For men/women off the street they should simply ask for it in their enlistment contract or walk away until the recruiter gives them what they want. SOF assignments are not open to females but some jobs in the 82nd Abn Div are. For information on HALO/HAHO training go to the "Military Freefall school" link below (you must first be static-line jump qualified before applying for HALO training and your unit must have a need for HALO qualified personnel). All "special operations" units listed below train for missions in "air, land and sea," the Navy SEALs being the most capable "water ops" unit. It is best if soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines first gain experience in their first 2, 3 or 4 year enlistment before applying for an SOF unit. One exception is the 75th Ranger Regiment which can be joined off the street by those that have the right stuff. For the Navy, USAF or USMC check with your recruiter for info on joining an SOF unit off the street. In the Army it helps if you first serve in units like the 82nd Abn, 101st Abn or the 75th Rangers for at least a couple years as an infantryman, combat medic (91B), combat engineer, communications tech, or in intelligence (pay grade E-4 or E-5) before trying out for the "green berets" or SFOD-D. As you will see below, our Armed Forces offer many opportunities for those who want to join the ranks of the Airborne.

And if I can just mention here, to anyone considering military service, that if you are in college and don't want to go full time, there are Special Forces units in the Reserve Components (National Guard and Army Reserves) as well.
Colorado has got two: The 5th Bn, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and a new unit, the Theater Special Operations Command for Korea (TSOC-K). Both units are Airborne and on jump status.
I don't have a web page link yet, but anyone who is interested and is in (or willing to commute to) Central Colorado, please email me for further info:
martinjmpr@yahoo.com
...and I will hook you up with one of our recruiters. If you have any questions about what we do there, ask me.

Hooahs, I got a question about SOCOM via e-mail and wanted to post the answer here too.
SOCOM stands for Special Operations Command. A command (SOCCENT) that is subordinate to CENTCOM, CENTCOM being subordinate to the DoD. Both CENTCOM and SOCOM have headquarters at MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL (CENTCOM is responsible for operations in the Middle East). Thats in the news all the time so it doesn't violate OPSEC. During the Gulf War it was actually repeated almost daily. For other U.S. commands around the world see the links below.
Units subordinate to SOCOM are as follows:
-U.S. Army Special Opertations Command (USASOC)
-Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC)
-Naval Special Warfare Command (NSWC)
-Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC)
-Joint Special Operations Task Force (JSOTF)
You can see all of their emblems above except JSOTF.
By default "USMC Force Recon" falls under NSWC. Basically JSOC is SOCOM in theory/training, and JSOTF is SOCOM in practice/execution. JSOC is located in Ft. Bragg. There can be different JSOTFs operating in different parts of the world at the same time. Don't want to elaborate more due to OPSEC.
Hope this did not confuse hooahs here more.
To learn more about other units subordinate to SOCOM (yes, there are more) go here:
www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/dod/socom.htm

UPDATE: you can now join the "U.S. Army Green Berets" (Special Forces) off the street. Ask your recruiter for the 18X options. Be advised that from the time you enlist with the 18X option 'til your actually serving in an A-team as an "E-5" will take about 2 years (or more). Your initial enlistment I think needs to be for 4 years to get the option. If you "fail" you will end up serving whatever time is left in your enlistment in a leg or airborne unit in one of the following army specialties:
-Infantryman
-Combat engineer (construction/demolitions)
-Radio operator (comunications specialist/radio maintainer/RTO)
-Combat medic (military EMT or paramedic)
-Intelligence/operations specialist
-Forward observer (FO)
Even if you don't make the cut as a "Green Beret" you would still be able to serve your country which is a lot more than most "Americans" can say.
Visit my SPECIAL FORCES links above to learn more about what it takes to become an A-team stud. Not an easy ride but extremely rewarding. Good luck and NEVER quit!
