Spec-ops boss at Lackland
For the first time, the commander of the Air Force’s basic-training wing comes from a special-operations background.

Col. Robert H. Holmes, who’s been selected for brigadier general, on July 18 assumed command of the 37th Training Wing at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

Most recently a special assistant to the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, Holmes is a career combat control officer. He has commanded a combat control detachment, the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron and the 720th Special Tactics Group.

Holmes is “a natural to command Lackland,” said Maj. Gen. John F. Regni, commander of Air Education and Training Command’s 2nd Air Force, at the change-of-command ceremony.
Holmes said his background gives him a strong connection to the enlisted force.

“I grew up with the troops,” he said. “The retired chief master sergeants who were here today mentored and coached me.”
Holmes took over the wing from Brig. Gen. Frederick D. Van Valkenburg Jr., who is moving to U.S. Strategic Command after 21 months commanding the 37th.

I don't know JR. Putting a guy with that kind of background in charge just might result in a deterioration of the notoriously high standards for rigorous initial entry training set by the USAF. []

Oh my God it's about time!!!

The mentality of the leadership down at Lackland for the past few years (okay, I'm sure it's been decades) has been the typical PC bulls**t.

The AF needs someone to grab the bull by the horns, and most importantly, lead by example. It's critically important that our new recruits are trained to a standard that parallels the expeditionary nature that our service now lives by.

Althought I've never met the man, I eagerly look forward to Col Holmes going in there and infecting the training community with his own principles that have obviously taken him through his career.

Nothing but good can come of this!!!

Damian - He's an awesome guy... Hopefully he'll go a long way up the chain... As you know, there are no G.O. CCT positions, but it's obvious someone is grooming him for something much more than just command at Lackland, eh?

Airborne!

JR,

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the grooming. I personally like the way that Gen Jumper is implementing change in the AF (although I'm not sold on the idea of the new uniform). It's obvious that as a service, we've been going downhill for years now and that process is being reversed.

I'm already hearing an incredible amount of excuses from AF "chubbie buddies" on why they can't take the new PT test. I simply tell them that they have been getting over all these years with the bike test and it's now time to pay the piper!!!
