Ok, I just got off the phone with my brother and he has been playing with the idea of joining the Army for the year he's been out of high school. He has now pretty much made up his mind and is going to go see his friendly recruiter next week. He has already taken the ASVAB so that is knocked out. His long term goal is to be a cop so the logical choice is to become an MP in the military. I have heard, however, that the civilian LE community doesn't necessarily want a former MP. Is this true and if so what would a better MOS choice be? Also from you recruiters out there - I told him to get exactly what he wants in his contract and if they can't get it for him, he needs to walk. He doesn't want anything outrageous, just MOS and jump school. Now what I don't know is how that works. Are there "slots" to fill with certain requirements? Is there a cycle, i.e. beginning of the "month" and end of the "month" when the slots are gone? With everyone nowadays entering as a PV2 or PFC what are the requirements for that? He has some college and I remember that if you had college it was a promotion from the start. This is what I've got for now and I'll be dragging his butt over here to Pnet soon. Thanks in advance for you're help!

Infantry is a bigger plus for LEO than MP from all that I've heard from LEO and friends who were applying for LEO jobs. MP isn't a big hinderance but it's looked at as having to retrain and break habits learned for a different situation.
There are a number of security low drag jobs that look to MP experience including Federal police.

Hey man, im in the same boat as your bro, and yes, going army to get your badge is an excellent choice of career advancement. Here in South Florida, people with 3+ years military get higher priority in the training and hiring process. It is estipulated by the local and state agencies that if you have military experience, it is prefered for you to be MP or Infantry. However, they LOVE ranger certified personnel, especially for the higher speed areas such as Special Response, SWAT etc. I have not heard of a leaning of MP over Infantry or viceversa so far, either one would suit fine, but Airborne School is something that he should be looking at no matter which one he feels is good for him. Tell him not to worry about being an MP. Being an MP will not help him one bit to become a police officer IMO. The military experiance itself will be the greatest help. Tell him to pick an MOS that he is interested in. I would personally suggest doing something in the military that you can't do in the real world.... go ADA!!!!!!

Cal, If he knows where he wants to serve as a LEO, it might not hurt for him to talk with them about what they look for in an applicant. He can then tailor his goals in the military to support his ultimate goal of being a cop based off that info, rather than just speculation. Depending on the number of credit hours, college can lead to an advanced promotion (a BA = E4 right out of the gate). Referring an applicant who subsequently enlists to a recruiter (if he scores 50 or above on the ASVAB) can lead to a promoition, as can being an Eagel Scout, JROTC time, or completing a series of pre-BCT tasks. BTW, the Army is offering a 3000 enlistment bonus to enlistees who choose airborne in selected MOS's (I don't have a list of what they are). One last piece of advice. The recruiting month for the Army runs from the middle of one month to the next. More options are usually available at the beginning of a recruiting month, so your bro should look at enlisting on the 19th or 20th, close to the beginning of the month.

Thanks for your help guys. BTW, what is it that the actual recruiter will do for him? I can't remember if it was there that the contract was signed with his stuff, or if it was at MEPPS. I have successfully dragged his sorry butt over here and he has registered, he is at the recruiter's today and he will be putting up an intro here soon.

I signed my contract at Mepps, it was there that I got the airborne option. If it hadn't been for a guy at mepps asking me if I wanted airborne, I would have ended up a LEG!!
