Hey all, I'm going to try and make this short. I'm going into the army as an officer, and I'm shootin' for MI (since I know Spanish, and the Argentine culture and all that stuff). I am wondering what kind of training do MI Captains get to become SF? I know that they're there, shoot I've read about them alot. But when I look for them on the web I can't find them. It's very frustrating.

Anyway, if you could help me with that I would be very appreciative. AC.

And oh yes, if I am wrong in anything please feel free to correct me, even though I know that y'all have no problem in doing so. [] AC.

If you go to a Special Forces group as an MI officer, I am unaware of any additional training that you receive other than the MI Officers Basic Course for lieutenants and MI Officers Career Course (used to be called Advanced Course)for Captains, and of course, BAC.

If you are an MI officer who wants to be an SF officer, ie move from Combat Support to Combat Arms, then you go to SFAS, then the Q course followed by SERE and language training.

I've had friends who were assigned to SF groups as signal officers, who did not require special "SF" training prior to reporting for duty.

JumpmasterK will have more info on this as he's worked MI for SF Groups.

After getting 1Lt start putting your paperwork in for SF and go through SFAS and the SFQC. It may not be required for support jobs, but getting the Q Course is the best way to get into SF. A high school buddy of mine is Signal and went to SF in the 80's. He went through the Q Course and although he never served on an A Team, he has spent much of his career in Special Ops.

509,

Since 1995 the only way to get the long tab is to complete SFAS and Q Course and then put on the crossed arrows.

Ben, I understand things have changed a little in the last ten years. Actually, while I didn't make it clear, that is what I am proposing he do as that would be the surest way to get to SF.

My buddy spent time was initially the signal officer in one of the battalions at 7th Group. As he went up the ladder in rank his assignments tended to be more on the SOCOM side than the Group side.

Argentinecowboy: Are you talking about branching SF or staying in the SOF community as an MI officer? Both are possible. When I was at 3rd Group we had an MI officer who had just completed the SF Q Course but MI Branch would not release him, so he spent a year or so as the Bn S-2, then when MI finally released him to SF branch he took over an ODA.

But, as has been pointed out here, SFAS and the Q course are requirements to branch. OTOH, there are lots of opportunities for MI officers within the SOF community.

PS: Here's a little help with the MI world: The MI symbols tend to be a lightning bolt, a dagger, and a key. Or, as we put it, "A lightning fast stab in the back is the key to success!" []

haha, thanks martin. I'm still considering both options. I'm also considering doing what LTMac did and branch detail for 3 years. Anyway, thanks for the help. AC.

Hey, it's me again. So...is there no way to get the SF training without going ODA? Don't misinterpret me please, I'm not knocking ODA's, but I was wondering if there was something like Ranger school for SF. Kind of like a condensed version of the Q course. I know I read about it in Vietnam, and maybe that's what y'all were saying. But there is no way of getting a more condensed version of it for, say, MI officers?

Shoot, I'm sorry if it all seems hard to comprehend, but I am still considering two very different career paths: MI and go Ranger Batt. then SF, or Infantry with the same progression. I'm thinking, I'm thinking, Oh dang!! I sprained my brain!!

Anyway, ow! Thanks for any help available. AC.

And, oh, yeah, could anybody tell me what an SF counterintelligence officer would do? How much relation with indigenous people, armies, government officials, etc. I know it's alot to ask. I wouldn't ask if y'all weren't great soldiers. Thanks. AC.
