Sorry for the shotgun email, but it is all I got time or at the moment. I finally got online over here! So here is the latest rom the sandbox from B4B!

26 July 2003

Hello from Kirkush, Iraq!

I am sorry it took me so long to send a report from Iraq, but we just now installed a satellite internet connection. We have been on the ground here since the 14th of July and are living on a base in the middle of nowhere that is in the middle of construction. If you can imagine having a house built for your family and moving in halfway through the building process, you will have a good idea of conditions at the moment. I won’t go into the details except for the ingenious manner of washing clothes.

The best way to do laundry in the absence of any sort of facilities is to take a large plastic tub into the shower. Place the dirty clothes in the tub and step into the tub. Shower normally. Water will of course run into the tub along with soapsuds. For the cleanest clothes, stomp the clothes vigorously while showering! Don’t forget to rinse…

We learned yesterday evening that Al Qaida has officially mentioned this camp and Vinnell personnel in particular as targets, which comes as no surprise. The only question was at what point that would happen, not ‘if’. When one considers that this project is the number two priority for this country, it is not hard at all to understand the opposition by terrorist groups.

No actual incidents of terrorist violence have occurred near here recently and security is being improved on a daily basis. Of course there are those who are will complain no matter how good security is, but perhaps they are not aware of the additional protection that the prayers of the saints here avail.

My job is pretty much as I expected it would be. I am pretty much a Drill Instructor, or platoon TAC sergeant. Those of you that have ever been to a military school know what I mean. I will also have additional instructor duties specific to responsibilities associated with an Army signal platoon for a company-sized unit.

We are currently in the middle of a pilot course in which we have a small number of former officers in the Kurdish army. The instructors have a chance to practice their skills and learn about the differences in teaching in a foreign country with translators and many cultural differences. I’ve spent some time just sitting and talking with these fine men and also letting them teach me some Arabic. They are soldiers, just like soldiers worldwide, but have spent years fighting and resisting the former regime.

Concerning Christian fellowship, I have met several more men growing in their faith with whom I have had a chance to talk about our great God – in addition to the Christians I met on the way over. Two evenings ago I was on duty at the barracks for the students and noticed the night shift CQ reading his Bible. Naturally it was another chance for fellowship. We do not have a specific scheduled Bible study because of the training schedule, but we definitely pray for one another daily and share our respective journeys into God’s word when we have a chance. There are services at the 4th Infantry Division compound on Sunday, but that is a workday for us. We are also short vehicles and have been unable to schedule transportation for those who have time to attend. I am sure that after awhile I will be able to go over and meet the ministry team over there.

We have very limited Internet access finally and are allowed a 15 minute block of time daily if we have a chance to get to the computer. Eventually we should have an internal network system and sufficient assets to have several computers with Internet capability.

27 July Continuation

Sunday morning! One of the guys started talking about going to church at home and listening to gospel music and I put on some good gospel music. Hopefully today I will b e able to squeeze in a little time to go online. I probably have more email to go through than my 15 minutes will let me answer so I will probably save email to disk, answer it offline and send replies the next time I can get online.

Please pray for continued safety here as well as for the morale of the group. Living conditions, along with constant changes have strained emotions and tempers are short.

Again I apologize for the shotgun email. Personal replies to mail will be forthcoming as soon as I can get to my mail and answer everyone!

In His Toolbox,

Dan
