Okay, you guys aren't going to believe this. I know I can't!
For those who don't know me (both of you [ ]) I was a law student, and finished my second year in 2002. Then I got notified that my former NG unit was going to Afghanistan, so I dropped out of school to go with them, and now I'm headed back to finish my last year. Well, of course, the class I started with in 2000 graduated this May.
So, anyway, my best buddy and drinking pal couldn't really make up his mind about what kind of law he wanted to practice, or even if he wanted to stay with it at all (this isn't unusual, BTW. Nothing will make you hate the law more than spending three solid years studying it.) My friend is very outdoors oriented, worked for several years as a guide in the Jackson, Wyoming area (Tetons, Yellowstone, and the surrounding areas) and is quite an avid hunter and fisherman.
So, having graduated law school, what did he decide to do? Join the Army. But not just join the Army (they have been recruiting JAG officers here for some time), but actually to enlist in the Army, with the 18X option!
I don't know if it was my drunken war stories that tipped the scales for him, or if he just wanted to have a little "adventure" before he settled down, but in any case, I'm pretty sure he'll make it through. He's in good shape and has tons of determination.
Anyway, here's the best part: He's not shipping out until after he takes the bar exam (which is this week, BTW.) Once he passes the bar exam and is admitted to a state bar he will be, in every sense, a lawyer, whether he practices or not.
Kind of gives a new meaning to the term "Barracks Lawyer", doesn't it.
Interestingly, he hasn't told anyone else that he plans on doing this, except for a few close friends. I know that even at my conservative school most everyone would be shocked if they knew, and would probably think he was crazy for doing it.
As for me, though, I'm proud of him. It takes a lot of guts to do what you want to do instead of doing what you're expected to do by parents, colleagues and society at large. I think he's going to do great, and who knows? Maybe he'll even make a career out of it.
Anyway, just wanted to share that. Not quite a "Pat Tillman" type story, but still it's one that should give you hope that not everyone in school is clueless.

So he will be Pvt. Joe Smith esquire?
Go with God, but make Him walk the point.
If you load a mudfoot down with a lot of gadgets he has to watch somebody a lot more simply equipped - say with a stone axe - will sneak up and bash his head in while he is trying to read a Vernier. - Robert Heinlein

All I see is smoke......(altough in today's PC environment he might get away with it).
