Would I be allowed to bring a book to read, and a small journal?

If your OSUT is the same as my basic was - I don't think you'll be able to bring a book to read, but I think a small journal will be feasible. You have to turn in all of your civilian stuff when you get there.

No - you'd be allowed to keep your wallet, religious stuff, etc. You wouldn't be allowed to keep books, civvie clothes, bags, etc.

Also, I'm not sure if it's still available but there used to be a link I believe on one of the military websites that had packing list related pages for those about to ship out. If I can get a hold of the URLs I'll post them.

Take lots of smokes, pogie, nudie books, etc. This will make you very popular not only with your fellow recruits but your drill sergeants as well!!!!

I still remember when I got my packing list in 1983, the items not allowed

1. Tuba

2. Golf Clubs

3. Pets

4. Fire Arms

I remember my dad telling me that the reason those things were listed is becayse at some point in time some dumb azz probably showed up with them.

What will happen is you will pack everything on the list and then when you get there they will inspect to make sure you have evrything then you will put it all in one of your new duffle bags and they will store it and you won't see it again till you leave. At least that is how I remember it.
