I am posting this because I thought some of you would know him based on his bio.
Terry J. Payne
Nov. 7, 1960 March 3, 2004
Retired Lt. Col. Terry John Payne, a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, passed away on Wednesday
He was 43. Lt. Col. Terry Payne was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in May 1983 at North Georgia College, Dahlonega, Ga. Payne then attended the Engineer Officer's Basic Course, Airborne and Ranger Schools. He was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division as a rifle platoon leader in B Company, 1st of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR). He subsequently served as 3-505 PIR Combat Support Company executive officer, Battalion Support platoon leader and S4. During this time, he was deployed extensively to Latin America in Operation Golden Pheasant II and to other operational missions. He also deployed to the Middle East as part of the United Nations Multi-National Force and Observer mission in the Sinai Desert. In 1988, he was then assigned as the Tunnel Team S2, Special Troops Battalion, 8th U.S. Army, Republic of Korea. Payne was reassigned to the 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division where he served as S2, 1-505 PIR. He also commanded C Company, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion and deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Following command, he served as operations officer, Joint Analysis Center, Royal Air Force Base, United Kingdom for 3.5 years. He was often deployed on no-notice to serve as the collection manager, 5th Allied Tactical Air Force, Vicenza, Italy. He was also tapped to conduct sensitive collection missions throughout European command's 83 country area of operations in aircraft, submarines, or on land in support of operations: Provide Promise; Support Hope; Assured Response; Provide Comfort; Joint Endeavor; and numerous others. Later, he served as the support to military operations collection manager at the National Security Agency's Overhead Collection Management Center, Fort Meade, Md. Following a classified assignment, he served as the SMDC deputy G-2, Research, Development & Acquisition Division Chief where be had actively and enthusiastically supported all the MSE's. His awards include the Bronze Star and others.
Survivors include his wife, Stefanie W. Payne; two sons, Matthew Terry John Payne and Tanner Ryan Payne, all of Athens; parents, Charles and Ollie Payne of Dallas; and one sister, Tonya Westmoreland of Marietta, Ga. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Don Osborn officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Darryl Adams, George Toon, Ken Palmer, Dan Brasher, Jeff Musolf, Randy Adams, Karl Green and Mike Zarbo will serve as pallbearers. Steve Nicholson and Mark McElyea will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Better yet how does a officer commissioned as an Engineer get assigned as a rifle platoon leader in the 82d instead of an Engineer platoon leader? RIP, he is a graduate form a great military college here in Ga.

| That is odd Dale. I guess Division had too many Engineer LTs and not enough Infantry LTs at the time. Does certainly seem odd.

John, according to a friend of mine who knew him he had been complaining of not feeling well and was talking to his son about it when he literally dropped dead. RIP, brother. As for the rifle platoon leader, our local paper is not known for its accuracy in reporting those type of details, even in the obituaries.
