Shot, when the new Marine pattern was approved the Commandant wanted to get it pattented so the other services could not use it. That was widely reported in the news. I do think they decided on the pattern based on function and field testing, but once done they wanted the uniform to be unique to the Corps(remember the furor over Navy corpsman wearing the uniforms with the EGA in them).
Second, buttons may be more of a hassle but I hated velcro in tactical situations, and we had next to nothing with velcro on it when I was in. If you're sitting in an ambush position and have to open a pocket you better hope it's not secured by velcro.

509...
The MC copywrighted the pattern not so that other services couldn't use it. Since The MC is a Govt Entity, any other Govt Entity can use something that is a copywright of the US Govt. It was protected so that no other company could sell the pattern and fabric. Didn't work too well, I've seen it already "Brand-New" at surplus stores.
My two cents on this matter (Being in the AF) would be the following. There are those in the AF (AFSOC, SP, EOD) who would benefit from a "woodlands" pattern, either what we have now or could develop. The majority of the AF could benefit from some type of "urban" camo. Something with a black/grey mix. Since the majority of the AF resides on AF bases, having uniforms that kinda resemble the area would be good.
Me...I'd like something from realtree that would give me a "desk-cluttered-with-papers" look so that I can hide in Cubicle land.

Pusher, my comments about the copyright are based upon published reports at the time the decision was being made to adopt it. I don't recall if they were quoting the Commandant, if it was unnamed sources or if that was the reporter's analysis.
The majority of the AF would benefit from some type of urban camo if the majority of the AF were likely to be engaged in urban combat. As it is, outside of AF SOF and air crews I simply don't see why the AF needs a camo uniform at all. Now if they are buying them because the other services have adopted them and it saves the government money, fine. But if the desire is to have a different uniform then the AF doesn't need a camo uniform.

Hmmm, I wonder if I can get a realtree suit.

So in that case the USAF should adopt black fatigues with a yellow dashed stripe running down the middle of the front and back. That way airmen will blend in with the airfield tarmac surface.[ ]

Natural camouflage from your immediate surrounding is what is needed here. So take a bunch of used 'post-it' notes and staple them to your BDU's. Think of it as an 'urban ghille suit'.[ ]

I want to see how the Army handles pockets and cut on the new BDU. They might even improve over the Marine uniform.

One thing I've seen w/ the wear of the new Marine uniform is a problem w/ the sleeve pockets.
While they work good in theory, when the sleeve is rolled up it almost rolls up all of the pocket.
It would be good if the pockets could have the bottoms flaired out...kinda like WWII para-pockets. They wouldn't look good starched down, but you could cram em full of stuff in combat.
On the Velcro-button things...how about a happy medium like Snaps or lift the dot fasteners?

That's not a problem. The only time the pocket will need to be used is in the field. In the field, sleeves are down anyway.

For the small sleeve pockets it works perfect.
The trouser pockets are basically the same but they have an elastic thingamabob inside to have a snug fit when quick dropping in gear and not losing crap when rolling around prone etc.
