I have enlisted in the Army as a medic(91W) and really want to serve as a paratrooper. I was unable to get Airborne in my contract due to being considered glossary non-prior service. I was told that I would be allowed to volunteer at BCT or AIT. My recruiter called the Airborne Recruiters and found out that they will not be soliciting medics at this time due to overmanning. Does anyone out there know what I may be able to do to get Airborne? I know that I can volunteer after a year or more in, but I would like to get assigned initially and serve as a paratrooper medic. Since the new stabilization plan seems to be moving foward, I feel it is almost imparative to get assigned to an Airborne unit from the get-go. I really appreciate any and all help or advice. Feel free to email me at PilSungUSA@aol.com if you do not want to post here.

Thank You.
I keep hearing they will need personel, but the numbers "game" is showing that they will not be needing medics. With the deployments, and personel PCSing and ETSing, you would think they would be trying to get their hands on anyone who would want to serve as Airborne.
I enlisted in the USMC(oops) and was Entry-Level Separated during recruit training for a bogus medical. After my required 6 months, I decided not to reenlist but pursue Army ROTC. Now, I feel it is important to have enlisted experience prior to being an officer, if I choose to earn a commission. I may try to be a Senior NCO someday instead.
I have been bugging my recruiter a lot regarding this, and according to the Guidance Counsellor at MEPS...Airborne has not been showing up for about two weeks. Even if...I would not be eligible since I required a medical waiver, which was not a problem at all...more of a paper thing. My recruiter looked in the reg.'s and it stated that I should be eligible despite this, but we have been unable to make headway. I have seriously considered renegotiating my contract for either 11X, 13F, or 13B since it would be easier to volunteer at one of these OSUTs for Airborne...but they are unable to give me a general idea of when I can ship out if I do so, and that is keeping me from doing so. I really want to leave so, and people in my RS have been coming back from MEPS with August through September ship dates, and I really need to leave within 2 months. This is eliminating options for me and really kind of ________ me off. I want to serve and will serve no matter what it takes, even if I end up being a leg. I just really want something and I am hitting brick walls.
Thank You for your reply...any advice...I am all ears.

Let me give it to ya straight here, YOU COULDN'T BE MORE SCREWED.

You have about a .0048% chance of getting jump school from AIT. You let those little bastards strongarm you, and now you will have to wait until your first reenlistment most likely.

FOR THE LAST TIME!!! IF IT AIN'T IN WRITING, IT AIN'T YOURS!!!

They tell everyone there are no slots. Until you say, "no slot, no sign". Then they magically find 3 or 4 different ship dates with Airborne for you. You got played...

Thanks for the straight poop, that is what I am/was afraid of. I am going to see if flexing a little muscle tommorrow to my recruiter and asking that it be passed up the chain of command might work.
I tried the "no slot, no sign" but my recruiter knew better and had apparently told the GC that. I really want to serve. I was the last person and they had the ROC on the phone a few minutes after quitting time trying to get me in that day so I would not have to wait until the next day and sit around another 24 hours. They also were unable to allow me to compare ship dates since to procure my contract they had to call the ROC and pull each slot individually. My Glossary non-prior status would not allow them to bring it up on the computer. I should have felt that red hot poker going up my ___ as I was sitting there.

CONGRATS and THANK you for going to serve our Country.

However, as far as being a Paratrooper and or Airborne, not everyone can be one of the few!

So, go serve and be proud of that service.

Good luck getting to BAC. But the first thing you need to learn is attention to detail. I have moved this to the Recruiting Forum where it should have been placed to start with. Thank you for wanting to serve our Country and never quit.

Stay in shape, keep your nose clean and go SF when you make E4-promotable.

Problem solved.
