I have  been looking for my father James Young for quite a few years now and have recently stumbled on your website.  My father was in his late teens/early 20s when I was born and lived in Napa, California, in 1966 when I was born.  The last time I saw him was approximately August 1967 when he left for basic training/paratrooper school somewhere in Texas and then off to Vietnam.  My parents wrote to each other for awhile and then lost touch and I've been thinking about looking and now searching for the last several years.  Unfortunately, I have no vital records information to locate my father with except this information.  Do any of you have a recollection of serving with a James Young that came from California during 1967-1969 or possibly Texas (he may have met and married in Texas around 1968) before going to Vietnam??????  I really could use your help.  Thank you so much.

Missy, good luck with your search, but with just the information you have it is going to be hard to find. I will try to give you some background info that might or might not be helpful. To my knowledge there were no posts in Texas, then or now, with Army Basic Training. The most likely places he would have gone for that are Ft. Polk, Louisiana or Ft. Dix, New Jersey. There were other posts where Basic was conducted, but my experience with veterans is that these were the two most common. And Airborne training was only being conducted at Ft. Benning, Georgia and Ft. Campbell, Kentucky at that time.

The only thing I can suggest is to find out where he was from and start looking there for relatives. Without any more information to narrow it down it will be hard to track him down. Again, good luck.

You can go to this link and try to get a copy of his records.  The drawback is that a certain level of detail is required in the form, and you may not have all the info.  Good luck.

Thank you for taking the time to look at and respond to my post.  I know that I don't have a lot of information on my father and that was one of the reasons why I posted here hoping that someone who was a member would remember serving with him and help me find him.  On the slim personal information that I do have, I have been looking where I was born and where he was from to no avail.  But I wasnted to thank you for your time and effort to repond to me.
