For Bible study, I've come across a few in my AO. Dunno which I should go with, as they are from different churches, ie: Catholic, Baptist, etc.

I was told to try to find a Non Denominational (sp?) Bible Study group.

While reading last night, I came across a passage that I'd like to post here, it really stuck out at me.

Evil Unchecked Grows, and Evil Tolerated Poisens The Entire System. Jahwal Nehru

-------------------------------------------------------------

In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.
Mark Twain.

Suffering  often occurs at the hands of others. But it has a way of revealing what is in our own hearts. Capacities for love, mercy, anger, envy, and pride, can lie dorment untill awakened by circumstances. Strengh and weakness of heart of heart is found not when everything is going our way but when flames of suffering and temptation test the mettle of our charecter. As gold and silver are refined by fire, and as coal needs time and pressure to become a diamond, the human heart is revealed and developed by enduring the pressure and heat of time and circumstance. Strengh of charecter is not known when all is well with our world but in the pressence of human pain and suffering.
(Job 42:1-17;Rom. 5:3-5;James 1:2-5:1 Pet.1:6-8)

When looking for a Translation, you have to be sure of it's accuracy. Some of the new moderan day language versions, fall very short of the intended meaning at the time it was written. Remember, it was written in a style of Hebrew, Arameic and Greek that is not spoken any more. What this is leading to, whoever or whomever translates the Bible, must have some very solid standing in the original languages.

The most trusted versions are the NIV and the New American Standard. My understanding is the NASV is the most accurate, word for word, translation. Both are easy to read and follow.

If you want background on what you are reading. Find a CD version of William Barclay's Daily Devotional Study Bible. The book volume is some 20 books long and is about $180 (which I hope to one day add to my libary).
His background and knowledge of the area, history, political setting, outside influenes has got to be unmatched. Let me explain:

In John Chapter 10. Jesus speaks of the gate through which all must enter. The background actually comes from the days of sheperding. When a shepard would be out with his flock. At night the flock would be lead into a type of paddock with large rock walls. There was only one way in and out. The shepard would actually lay down across the opening, that way nothing could come or go without his knowing. Making himself the door or gate. So Jesus is literally saying in order to enter you must go through Him because he is the door/gate. No one can enter without Him. I had always known what it means but I never knew why? I now know. It adds what my wife and I call, Flavor!

With my NASV and Barclay's Notes, I can come to a much fuller understanding.

Keep studying and looking. A friend told me a few years and I have adopted on my Voice mail message: If you really seek God - you will find Him. (again a referance to the Sheperd looking for the one lost sheep.)

I have several versions and my favorite for simple understanding and accuracy of translation is the New International Version. I started using it for Bible study when I worked with a youth group in Berlin. A version with study notes and cross references is also useful. By far the most valuable teaching "assistant" has to be the Holy Spirit indwelling the believer and bring the written Word to magnificant life in the heart of that believer.

Well, so much for my input.

I finally registered and have full access again so I can interact when time and Internet availability coexist!
