Howdy yall. I'm a 24 (25 in June) year old PFC in the Army Reserves. I went to AIT to be a 63Bravo (light wheeled mechanic). Well, I want to go active and go back to Benning (I did basic there this past summer) for infantry school.

I'd like to ask a couple things:

First off, am I too old? Is there a cut off date for infantry?

Second, will I have to do the entire (13 weeks???) thing or just go back for the last 4 or 5 weeks worth?

Third, I believe that by going active I'll basicly be re-enlisting. What are my chances of getting a perticular unit or duty station by request?

Lastly, I'll be busted down a rank by going active wont I?

Thanks for your time and advice.

Based on your greeting I'm going to assume you are from the south, so the first thing I will point out is that you need to show your upbringing and manners and fill out your profile and introduce yourself in the Reception/Inprocessing forum so we know who we are talking to. Don't make someone tell you twice on that.

The only cutoff date that I am aware of is for the Army generally and you are well under that. Should be no problem with the infantry.

Second, you will not have to redo BCT, only Infantry AIT, which I thought was around six weeks.

I don't think going active is considered reenlisting given the short amount of time you have been in, but you may be able to get a unit of choice. You should be able to put a preference but getting it could be another story.

I don't know why you would lose rank since you are only a PFC, but some of the recruiters and/or reserve members here would know more about that.

Troop: I was NG Ordanance who went active as 11B with 82nd in my contract (based on succesful completion of...)

Unless things have changed this is NOT a reenlistment same as ending a contract with Navy and going Army would not be a reenlistment. But you also will have trouble getting any type of enlistment bonus because you have enlisted before. Remember at the MEPS you are doing CONTRACT NEGOTIATION, this means if you want choice of duty station, schools, or bonuses it MUST be in your contract, if contract doesn't have what you want don't sign and have them call recruiter so he can fight with them, the Army always needs 11B so fight for what you want.
Entry rank should be based on your civ schooling.

You will have to get an early ETS from the guard (explain the situation to your 1SG/CO to start the paperwork) if you are still on contract there.

Finally Infantry is OSUT but they can slip you into a later week. I'll assume you intend to go Airborne because you asked this here. In that case don't push to evade the few extra weeks of basic, you'll be more adjusted for Division, 173rd, Batt, etc. IMO if you want to be a grunt then basic is just your job.

Good post March or Die, thank you.

Just for the record, I have no problem with going back and doing basic again. I had a lot of fun there. Well, about as much fun as a soldier can have with his DS 2 inches from his nose yelling, spiting, and slobering Well, I guess I wouldnt really mind missing the first 3 weeks or so. No real need to go through the 'brake down' period again.

Out of curiosity, what does OSUT stand for?

Oh, and heck yea I want my wings!

OSUT = One Station Unit Training   ...which in your case, will be at Ft. Benning, GA . Have fun on Sand Hill.

let me end all this right now.

TROOP, however honorable  your intention to serve in the infantry, you already have an MOS. as a recruiter i can tell you, you will 99.9% likely have to stay in hat MOS unless it's full on the active duty side. which again i can tell you, it isnt.

your NG unit has to release  you. if they don't, you don't join. as of yesterday, us recruiters can't use our connections to get you released. your 368 HAS to be signed by The state TAG (2 star). no exceptions.

if you had not completed AIT, ther may have been a possiblity you  could go infantry. the point is that you have completed AIT.

now if you want to serve, then talk to you unit and a recruiter. you  can change you MOS when you reenlist after you first 3 years on AD.

hate to be the anti-recruiter, but i'd rather you got th rel deal from a real recruiter.

I had done the same route...63B NG that reclassed Infantry and I must say it was one of the better decisions I had made. With that being said when I tried to leave my Guard unit and go Infantry they wouldnt let me, I had to go active and wait until my initial enlistment was up and then reclass, which I almost wasnt able to do unless I volunteered for Airborne assignment. I went back to Basic...Week 4 if I remember correctly, which from what I hear from some of my newer soldiers is a joke now so you should have no problem. The chances of you getting out of the Ordnance Corps now is slim to none, they are going to get there moneys worth out of you, they trained you for 13 weeks and it cost a pretty good amount to give you all that learning so my advice is to suck it up, go active as a grease monkey and be patient, if you really want it it will come, it is a safe assumption the Infantry will be hiring in a couple of years good luck in your endeavors whatever they may be.
