Another thing to look in to is becoming a Community Police Officer. Around here they do traffic direction details and the like, carry no firearm, and work once a week or so. My brother is one in North Kingstown, RI. Its a side job for him, a way to make some extra cash while in College ($28/hr.). He wants to be a cop.
He has been doing this for a couple months and is currently on a first name basis with every captain and the chief of NKPD. That certainly cannot hurt an applicant. He just turned 21, the minimum age for LEO's for all dept's in the state, so we shall se if it pays dividend's to know someone.
