Here's a black eye for my department. This guy was until recently our Union VP for our Road Patrol Services. Atleast noone can say this wasn't handled like any other case. Our dept. was not notified until after all this happened. Kinda blindsided, but atleast noone can scream favoritism. I can see this making national news before it's all over.
Longtime sheriff's deputy quits amid child porn investigation By STEPHEN W. HUBER , Of The Daily Oakland Press 01/06/2004 January 6, 2004 A veteran Oakland County sheriff's deputy has resigned while investigators try to determine if he is linked to the Internet exchange of child pornography in New York and California.
The deputy, a 17-year veteran road patrol officer, resigned Friday, five days after personal computer equipment was confiscated from
the man's Waterford Township home.
The two computers and various other equipment may contain at least 1,000 pornographic images involving children, Waterford police Detective Sgt. Frank Mostek said Monday.
"I've been working on trying to obtain data for the past four or five days, and I'm still not done yet," Mostek said. "There are hundred of images, probably at least a thousand, but I haven't seen them all yet."
Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota, who represents the former deputy, confirmed his client, who is divorced, had resigned from the department.
"He is presumed to be innocent," Sabbota said. "He chose to resign so his employment record would remain perfect the way it's always been."
Local police were alerted about the alleged exchange of the pornographic images by investigators from Orange County, Calif., who had traced the exchanges to New York and Michigan. Several others states are also believed to be involved, Mostek said.
The former deputy, 43, has cooperated with the investigation.
"At first he was surprised and didn't know why we were there," Mostek said. "When you read his face, he knew why we were there."
The case is expected to be presented to prosecutors this week, Mostek said. A conviction on charges for possessing child pornography carries up to four years in prison and up to seven years for distribution of child pornography.

Man that's terrible. This exact same thing happened up in Wiscasset, Maine. A respectable deputy sheriff was caught with stacks of kiddie porn in the trunk of his car. I remember my dad was really upset about that, along with the rest of the officers from surrounding local depts, he was an upstanding individual in the community and one of those "we can always count on this guy" type of officer. No one had a clue as to what he was doing in the shaddows. What a shame.
