It is a failure because the US Army found in it's own squad live fire tests at Ft. Benning that it was inferior to the M-16, the AK-47, and even the M-1 Garand it replaced. It was inferior to the Garand because funtional reliability under actual combat conditions was FAR less than the Garand or any of the other tested rifles for that matter.

Ok, I guess that's why the Commandant of the USMC, Gen. Walt, enthusiastically supported the Marine Corps move to the M-16 in '67/'68. They had been planning to replace the M-14 almost as soon as it came out with the Stoner weapon's system before adopting the M-16. So even had the M-16 not come along, the USMC would have replaced the M-14 with a 5.56mm Stoner rifle. That's how much the USMC thought of the M-14.

Not everyone. It's usually only REMFs, lazy people, target shooters, and gun writers seem to have major problems with the M-16.
quote: Every weapon system has its initial problems when introduced, but the M-14 was never allowed to be finalized (it is today though...the issued 14s are great guns!)
I see, so I guess you are not counting the M-14 development years from 1945 to 1960. How handy to overlook 15 yrs. of development and development costs that still lead to an abortion.
And as far as modern 'issued' M-14s being 'great guns', how the "F" would you know paperpusher?
quote: And the Taiwanese adopted the M-14....they were given the machinary to make them. Without the M-14, they'd have no rifle....something about those darn Germans and Belgians not wanting to trade w/ free China...
My point exactly, the only countries that adopted it were the ones we gave it to that couldn't buy anything else. Of course Taiwan also dropped the M-14 in favor of the M-16 later on.
quote: The Following is a exerpt from an email I recieved from my best friend who is in Iraq right now. He is a prior service Marine (4 years) and is currently in the 3rd Armored Cavalry
"What the hell's up man, having fun out hear, if you thought I hated the m-16 before triple it now"
So WTF does that prove? That someone who didn't like the M-16 before still doesn't like it? Here's another opinion. I used my M-16A2 just fine in GW1 and liked it.
quote: You deride the M-14 by saying it is inferior to the M-1...How? lighter and a larger capacity is good. Same operating mechanism and sights w/ a slightly different round.
The M1 Garand gas system is more reliable than the M-14's period. So no they don't both use the same operating system. The M-14's gas system is totally different and inferior to the M-1's.
quote: And how can the BM-59 (Its spelled Beretta [ ]) be superior considering they either have:
1. Big floppy Bipod attached
2. Huge Grenade launcher attached
Same as above. The BM-59 and MB-62 retained the M-1 Garand's method of gas operation. Therefore they are more reliable than the M-14. The BM-59 is an M-1 Garand that was rechambered for 7.62 NATO and fitted with a 20 rd magazine. The M-14 is not. The BM-59 is what the US Army could have had in 1950.
quote: So the FAL's and G-3's are superior because every country in South America, Africa, and the Mid East bought them.
No they are superior to the M-14 because they are better combat rifles. They are more reliable, more ergonomic, have less recoil, and their furniture is not affected by moisture or temperature.

Who let the Dogs out...woof-woof...woof-woof! Yawsa, yawsa, yawsa, looks like Delta_6, gots the answer to the question! Although I've fired a M-21 it is a different animal from the M-14 so I'll take Delta's word on the topic. I did like firing the CETME .308 though...nice shooting piece.
Stand in the door!
