Police motorcade to travel to funeral of deputy who died in the line of duty

December 04, 2003

By Emily Kulkus
Staff writer

One by one Wednesday, the men and women who protect Central New York walked out of a funeral home in LaFayette, took a deep breath of the bitter night air and reapplied their caps.

Hundreds of deputies, police officers and firefighters flowed in and out of Ballweg & Lunsford Funeral Home to pay their respects to Onondaga County sheriff's Deputy Glenn M. Searles. Searles, 31, died Saturday night after being struck by a minivan while assisting a stranded motorist on Interstate 481 in DeWitt.

More than 2,000 officers from all over the Northeast are expected to attend Searles' funeral today. Departments from Vermont; Memphis, Tenn.; Washington, D.C.; and Maryland have responded, according to the sheriff's department.

Services begin at 8 a.m. today at the funeral home, 2584 Field Lane. Then a motorcade will travel through Marcellus and Camillus on its way to an 11 a.m. funeral Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Syracuse.

The Mass will be followed by a private burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery on Warners Road in Camillus. Parking at the funeral home and around the cathedral on East Onondaga Street is expected to be tight. Searles' family, friends and fellow officers will have priority in attending.

Many departments have been working together to coordinate services for Searles.

At calling hours Wednesday, chartered Centro buses transported officers from nearby parking lots to help limit traffic congestion.

Traffic coordinators with flares, caution lights and signs guided cars around the funeral home.

Traffic was heaviest around Field Lane, off Route 20, when the calling hours began at 4 p.m. The steady flow of people continued for hours.

Regardless of the department on their sleeves, deputies, officers and firefighters shared condolences, handshakes and hugs outside the funeral home. Many returned to waiting patrol cars and fire engines.

Two solemn, white-gloved sheriff's deputies stood beside the building's intricate glass doors, opening them to mourners. Many waited outside for others to leave the building, sharing nods rather than words.

Searles, a graduate of Liverpool High School, started with the sheriff's department in January 2002.

He had spent six years with the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office, finishing there as a forensic investigator.

He is Onondaga County's second deputy to die in the line of duty. The first was Deputy David Clark, who was shot to death in February 1987 while transporting a prisoner.
