I have seen people in plainclothes with badges that I assumed were undercover detectives. Recently I realized that they are regular folks that have a Concealed Handgun License and have the badges to show that they are packing (I guess). What's the deal with the badges? Are they legal? Why do you need one? Is it a good idea?

I would worry that such a badge would open a person up to a charge of criminal impersonation, at least if the badge was constructed so that a person seeing it might be decieved into thinking the holder was an LEO.

Why would anybody want/need such a badge, anyway? Presumably the weapon is concealed, which means that the only way an LEO is going to find it is if the LEO does a search, and in that case, the LEO would presumably ask to see a permit, which of course the CHL permit holder is required to have on him.

Can't help but think of these badges as a lame kind of "cop wannabe" accessory.

That's what I thought. The only way I figure it may be legit is to warn potential attackers not to bother or get a cap in their ass. Kind of like a "Beware of Dog" sign.

I concur. Just a lame wannaby.
