I was just informed Second Chance has a recall out on their Monarch IIIA vests due to several failures back east. Does anyone have more details?

From their website

September 11, 2003

Dear Ultima/Ultimax Vest Wearer,

Effective immediately, we are offering a free upgrade for our Zylon-based Ultma and Ultimax concealable body armor.

We're doing this because our in-service vest testing has shown that previously worn Zylon vests wear out sooner than expected and indicates that there is a potential officer safety issue.

The free upgrade includes a set of custom-made ballistic pads which can be installed by officers. Once upgraded, the vest will then maintain its expected performance throughout the original warranty period. The free upgrade can be ordered on line at www.secondchance.com/pac or through our toll free hotline below. You will need both your serial number and your size available to place your order.

Also available is a minimal cot Monarch Summit replacement vest package.

Contact our toll free hotline (1-800-828-VEST (8378)) with the serial number and size of your original vest so we can begin manufacture of the custom-made pads or replacement vest right away.

In the meantime, please continue wearing your vest.

Please be assured, that as the concealable body armor industry leader for over 30 years, our focus continues to be your safety.

Thank you,

Paul Banducci Richard Davis

I heard from a dealer rep with Brigade Quartermasters at the Homeland Defense Trade show in Atlanta this week that there have been several cases of the ZYLON vests failing causing serious injury to the officers involved. I did not hear specifics other than it was a complete failure to stop a round that would have been stopped by kevlar and other like materials. The integrity of the materials in the Zylon vests broke down and it may have been due to condensation.

If it doesn't work...bring it back? I hope no one was killed before they found that out.

Zylon is fast becoming controversial.

Stick with Kevlar.

Brand new zylon is the best stuff out there, but apparently after time elapses, it has the stopping power of a wet paper bag!!
