Not wanting to use God's word to "spark debate" but instead to encourage, what do you think of this verse in Romans? Especially the the last half?
Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

possily that, if after showing the kindness Christ wants us to show our fellow man, if he can still harbor ill will towards you then, his fate is sealed.
Psalm 144:1Blessed be the LORD my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight

quote: Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
The enemy will lose self respect and hate himself because he has been lowered to becoming dependent on his hated enemy for his own survival. It's a mind game deal that leads to a paradigm shift. It's also difficult to bite the hand that feeds you. This tactic tends to 'break' a high spirited and pridefull person and his will to resist. Maybe we should have Saddam comment on this? LOL!!!

Sort of sounds like "Kill him with kindness"
"Some people dream of success...while others wake up and work hard at it"

Each of you said the same thing, I liked swords wording better, easyer to understand for a dumb grunt like me.
"Greater love than this hath no man, but that he should lay down his life for his friends."

Many times I have prayed that Saddam and Bin Laden would awake with the name of Jesus Christ written on their hearts.
When this happens then you know the war is over, don't hate your enemy so much you cannot pray for him.

Your a better man than I Agonyea because I prayed that both those folks would wake with a bayonet through their hearts...
"The degenerative and loony should never be denigrated but, rather, thanked. In their absence, the rest of you would be obliged to fill congressional seats... positions naturally unsavory to the sane and honorable." Thorax

Winnjr,
I cheated but I truly like what this man says.
Ya'll my favorite Biblical Commentary in the world is by William Barclay. His commentary was written back in the 40's and published in the 50's. The things he says make such great sense and really speaks to the heart. His background knowledge on the history, political settings, enviroment and overall knowledge of 1st Century Christianity and Christ is so indepth that he brings out things that I would have never known. His whole comment on these verse's actually cover 14 - 21 but I just took the verses that's being discussed here. The whole section is very good so I defer to him:
"(vii) We are to keep ourselves from all thought of taking revenge. Paul gives three reasons for that. (a) Vengeance does not belong to us but to God. In the last analysis no human being has a right to judge any other; only God can do that. (b) To treat a man with kindness rather than vengeance is the way to move him. Vengeance may break his spirit; but kindness will break his heart. "If we are kind to our enemies," says Paul, "it will heap coals of fire on their heads." That means, not that it will store up further punishment for them, but that it will move them to burning shame. (c) To stoop to vengeance is to be ourselves conquered by evil. Evil can never be conquered by evil. If hatred is met with more hatred it is only increased; but if it is met with love, an antidote for the poison is found. As Booker Washington said: "I will not allow any man to make me lower myself by hating him." The only real way to destroy an enemy is to make him a friend."
