82nd units headed back to Bragg
Associated Press
FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Units from the 82nd Airborne Division are scheduled to return from Iraq this week.
The division’s headquarters will be among the units returning Wednesday, post officials said. But the 2nd Brigade Combat Team — centered around the 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment — will remain in Iraq. The brigade will fall under the control of the 3rd Infantry Division.
In a telephone interview from Baghdad on Monday, Col. Arnold Bray, the brigade commander, would not say how long the brigade would be in Iraq. “We will be one of the later units to leave out of the war-fighting units,” Bray said.
Other elements scheduled to return Wednesday include: the Division Support Command Headquarters, 782nd Main Support Battalion, 1st Battalion of the 82nd Aviation Regiment, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion, 307th Engineer Battalion and the 82nd Signal Battalion.
About 22,000 soldiers are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan from Fort Bragg. Soldiers also will return from Afghanistan in the next few days, said Maj. Gary Tallman, a spokesman for Fort Bragg. But he said he didn’t have specifics on their return.
