Fort Richardson, Alaska
Task force ordered to Afghanistan
About 850 Fort Richardson soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 501st Airborne Task Force, have been ordered to deploy to Afghanistan in October in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
“The Geronimos of the 501st are ready for this mission,” said Maj. Gen. John M. Brown, U.S. Army Alaska commanding general.
The battalion will be attached to the 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), which is deploying to replace elements of the 82nd Airborne Division.
“The Geronimos have a fantastic reputation throughout the Army,” said Maj. Gen. F.L. Hagenbeck, 10th Mountain Division commander. “I am delighted that we will be working with them.”
The 1-501 is expected to be deployed for six months. The task force, which includes airborne and infantry soldiers as well as engineers, will conduct combat operations and humanitarian assistance operations in Afghanistan.

| Finally, the Army is doing something logical for a change. From the terrain in Afghanistan, I would have thought that the 501st would have been one of the first conventional units deployed to A-stan. Instead the 10th NON Mountain Div. went.

I also have a son in the 501st. He just got there from basic/ait and bac. It's great that he's in my old unit and in the same company. Damn, I'm proud of that young man! They all will do the U.S. proud.
