10th Mountain to send battalion to Iraq
Associated Press
FORT DRUM, N.Y. — The 10th Mountain Division says it will soon deploy another 600 troops to Iraq.
The entire 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, will travel to Iraq “in the near future,” the Army announced. The unit will “prepare for future contingencies as may be directed.”
The battalion spent six months as part of the U.S.-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo in 2001-2002. It returned in December from a “very successful” stint at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La., said battalion commander, Lt. Col. Douglas S. Mulbury.
Approximately 700 Fort Drum troops are now serving in Iraq. Those troops are to return to Fort Drum “in the next several months,” the Army said. About 500 members of 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, returned to Fort Drum last month after spending four months in Iraq.
Meanwhile, the division continues a major deployment to Afghanistan. By the end of September, about three-fourths of the division’s 10,000 soldiers will be in Afghanistan, where they are helping train the Afghan army and chase holdout al-Qaida and Taliban fighters.
------------------------------------------------------------ Out of every 100 men, ten shouldn't even be there, Eighty are just targets, Nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back." - Hericletus, circa 500 BC -----------------------------------------------------------
