quote: 3rd Infantry Division troops heading home
Army says all of division should be back by end of August.
Savannah Morning News
FORT STEWART -- The 3rd Infantry Division will return to Georgia over the next two months, division officials announced Monday.
The 3rd Brigade, which has about 4,500 people, will return to Fort Benning July 11 to 18.
Also set to return that week are parts of the Division Artillery Headquarters and Headquarters Battery with 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery Regiment; the Aviation Brigade Headquarters with 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment; 11th Engineer Battalion; 1st Battalion, 3rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment; and the 92nd Chemical Company.
The rest of the 3rd Infantry Division -- about 11,500 people -- should be home by the end of August, the Army said.
The tentative timeline for elements of the division to redeploy was announced by Maj. Gen. Buford Blount, the division's commander.
"While the return of units generally reflects a 'first-in, first-out' policy, some units are returning sooner because their mission is no longer required," Blount said. "We will continue to provide updates on the return timeline of units as information becomes available."
The 2nd Brigade will begin returning to Kuwait by late July and redeploy to Fort Stewart by Aug. 1, the Army said. The 1st Brigade and 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment is set to return to Kuwait in mid-August and back to Fort Stewart by the end of August.
Amanda Sanchez, the wife of Spc. Pedro Sanchez of the 396th Transportation Company, said she and her 19-month-old son, Jack, have already begun making welcome home signs.
"I feel relieved that the word is now official that the soldiers are returning," she said. "Before, it was all up in the air. And now I have something to look forward to. I can't wait for him to come home."
Division Headquarters, Engineer Brigade Headquarters, Division Support Command Headquarters, 703rd Main Support Battalion, 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, and other divisional units will flow out of Kuwait with the brigades, the Army said.
During the war, the 3rd Infantry took more casualties than any other U.S. military division, with 35 soldiers killed in Iraq.
Families initially expected the troops to have returned already. But the Pentagon tapped the 3rd Infantry, which specializes in desert warfare, to help with peacekeeping and crush pockets of resistance by Iraqis loyal to Saddam Hussein.
Louis Freedman, owner of an electronics store in Hinesville, isn't ready to begin celebrating just yet.
"The great news is the soldiers who just came back safe and sound," Freedman said. "As for the news of the soldiers returning, I'll take it with a grain of salt. Until I see them land at Hunter and arrive at Stewart, then I'll believe it."
Lewis Levine and and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
Looks like DFA might be back online pretty soon.

That is great news. Those warriors deserve to be rotated out.

I live in Phenix City, Alabama of course right next to Columbus and Fort Benning,Ga Tri-community.
We are holding our breaths untill the Brigade comes home and we will surely celbrate their arrival from Iraq.
Parades and parties are planned, for their honor.
We hope they do not tear up the town to bad, but I am sure that we can put it back together, again.

I'm glad for those guys and their families. They kicked butt in Iraq, and have earned a break. Let's hope that they don't have to fire a shot in anger for a long time.

I saw an article yesterday which said that the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd ID is already moving back to Kuwait to redeploy stateside. Maybe we'll have the Pnet Sam Kinnison back on the board on a more regular basis in the near future.[ ]
