Not to invade the HH6 forum, but I believe that this is the entirely appropriate forum in which to address this particular topic. The concern that Kate showed for Ed and his unfortunate accident, with consequent refusal to seek treatment, made me think about all the stupid things I've been through that HH6 made me see clearly.

As a Paratrooper, I've experienced damage to my body that were quite traumatic. Two specific cases are foremost in my mind. In one instance, I experienced a sprained ankle so bad that my whole lower left leg turned black and blue and swelled up beyond the ability to even wear a boot. As bad as it was, I told my loving wife that "It's not a problem; it'll go away". She made me go to the emergency room, where I got X-rays, treatment, and medicine. Although nothing was broken, I spent the next month in physical rehab with the associated medication.

The second, and potentially more dangerous incident occurred after a jump. To this day I still don't know how or why it happened, but I wound up with two broken ribs and bruising all over my upper body (basically where the parachute harness touches the body). When I got home after the jump, Yong Nan (HH6) FREAKED OUT seeing the damgage that had occurred. She tried to make me go to the hospital. I refused, as I had a jump the next day. Yeah, it hurt like hell, but I made that jump, too. That night, when she saw that I couldn't even move without groaning, she INSISTED that I go to the ER. The X-rays showed the two broken ribs, and I was instructed to do light duty for six weeks.

I guess this is my message to all spouses that love their Paratrooper: Take care of him. He's probably too stupid or too stubborn to take care of himself. And take note of anything....unusual. Injuries, discoloration, whatever it may be. Most paratroopers are too stubborn to admit a problem, and the HH6 might just have to step in to keep a Jumper(208) straight.

I for one have never stubbornly "worked through" an injury or ignored one. I have never fractured my leg and worked another nine hours with my leg so swollen it was twice it's normal size. I have never worked for days with my shoulder seperating at 3 times a day before finaly having it repaired 3 months later. I have never injured my knees on a Jump and gone ahead and suffered through the pain to finnish the Mission. I have never had an injury to my Cornea that caused me excruciating pain and worked the entire day like that.
Nope not stubborn at all! I always sought immediate medical attention. Now let me tell you about some Water Front Property I have for sale in the Mojave Desert.

Thank you Jumpmaster K. Yesterday was probably the worst day of my life. It felt surreal, like I'd been shoved into a nightmare. My mind kept screaming..."This isn't happening!!" but I knew that it was. I begged Ed to go to the hospital. I cried, pleaded and tried to guilt him into going. My birthday is this Saturday. Ed asked me what I wanted a few days ago. Yesterday I told him I wanted him to go get checked. THAT'S what I wanted!! That is all that I need. (I also told him that if he had internal injuries and didn't go to the hospital and died from it, I would piss on his grave). Not very tactful but "F" it!!! I would have done anything to get him to go.

I love Ed with all of my heart and to lose him after 2 months of marriage to something that could have been avoided would have been too much for me to take. I thank God that he will be all right and I thank all of you for your prayers.

I know that paratroopers are the toughest people alive but you guys need to try to understand the stress that refusing medical treatment puts on the HH6. I, today, believe that was more stressful than the accident itself. SUCK IT UP AND DRIVE ON up to the line of stupidity, don't cross it. So all of you HH6's out there, pull out all of the stops, get their stubborn a$$es to the hospital so you have more todays and tomorrows with them. If you don't, you may not. We were lucky.

Paratroopers? Stuborn? [bs] The hell you say, both of those in the same sentace is blasphamy!! [LOL] Ok Ok, so maybe a lil bit. I have mellowed some since my stroke but still hate Doc's and having things like what happend the other day at VA just make it worse. However, As JR said it best an we have all heard it before. I know I've never done anything like that. Bullshit.

As a young LT I as taking my platoon out for my first platoon evals. The intiation of the eval was a platoon jump followed by the associated missions.

Well, I landed on a rock on the jump. Broke my foot in three places. Humped the next 10 days without taking off my boot cause I new I would never get it back on.

After the evals went to the Doc. At that point he said "I can't do anything for you. The bones have already started to heal."

But hey, I couldn't abandon my platoon on my first eval, Right?
